It occurred to me a while back that while I was focusing on heel height…

I didn’t take account for the angle that the heel tubules were meeting the ground 🤔

Online I’m seeing many hooves that have also had a trim with focus on heel height…

These hooves all have heel angles shallower than the dorsal wall…

The heels having to grow quicker than the toe seemingly because at this shallower angle they need to grow more quickly to achieve balance with the dorsal wall…

This hoof has been lovingly trimmed by his owner and she has achieved some fantastic results in just over a month ❤️

When I let go of the reins, balanced correctly, and just let the heels be the height they chose to settle at… 😌

Thrush disappeared and heels stopped collapsing 🙌

Heels stopped growing at break-neck speed 🙌

Healthier heels means less deviation in wall growth 🙌

The best part is that the heels are finally hitting those healthy measurements all by themselves 🙌

And much more 😉

It’s so rewarding to only need float my rasp around the hoof … especially with the hard hooves in 🇪🇸 😌

It will likely to take years for the soft tissue to fully rebalance and heal but I finally feel like I’m on the right track with this girl 🥰

Another perspective is never a bad thing! 👀

Collaboration with others grows you…

Read, observe, listen, grow 🌷

You don’t have to agree with anyone 100%…

You can decide what sits well with you and what doesn’t…

No one is 100% right 100% of the time…

Well except the horse that is 😉 ❤️

If you do battle with the heels you will likely lose…

When I trimmed with my focus on heel height I saw distortion, crazy heel and bar growth, contraction and …

Toe landing!

The softer shock absorbing tissues are towards the back of the hoof yet I was seeing quite a few toe landings 🤦🏽‍♀️

When you force the heel down before it’s ready…

And force the horse into toe landing…

In my mind…

You’re heading towards toe pressure and serious restriction of blood flow to the pedal bone…

Serious un fixable damage to the pedal bone…

Plus serious damage to every joint and muscle of the horse 😢

Waiting for the heels to repair and be ready doesn’t mean we don’t see progress…

We can still make meaningful progress and for me the bonus of letting the hoof guide us is…

That we will probably see less issues and a more comfortable horse 5 years down the line 🙏🏻 ❤️‍🩹

So record your horse walking with the camera on the ground…

Slow and look frame by frame…

Wait for that moment of ground contact…

What’s hitting the ground first? 🤔

Tara 💕

Ps. I love the way the light is hitting this hoof, don’t you? 😜

"Design is a plan for arranging elements in a way that best accomplishes a particular purpose." - Charles Eames

… and who better to arrange those elements than the horse himself 🙌

So personally I wouldn’t be in a hurry to make big changes..

I have made radical changes before and the result wasn’t favourable 😢

I’d rather be guided by the hoof and wait for the heels to be ready to fully meet the ground❤️

My thinking is..

Cutting out a heel doesn’t change the history it left behind…

💕It doesn’t change the tubules that have already started to grow down…

💕Those tubules that were grown in to support the hoof that was before.

💕Tubules grown to connect with the floor at a certain angle.

When we suddenly take that heel away…

🥺Those tubules are suddenly stressed and weakened.

🥺Those tubules can start to bow.

🥺Those tubules are no longer meeting the ground how they should have.

I’m only thinking about tubules but there is so much that gets damaged or weakened when we make sudden changes to hoof balance...

Maybe even all the way to jaw alignment 🦷

I’ll always do what sits right with me and what each hoof responds well to…

Changes made at a speed that the horse and his nervous system can keep up with is what I’m choosing today ❤️‍🩹

Rehabilitation looking and feeling good 😌

Even when things aren’t perfect it’s time to rejoice the wins 🙌

It happened! And I was there to see it 💕

Short heels… or are they?

I’d like your critical thinking on this one…

I see a heel that’s been cut out each trim, running underneath the horse, long heel quarters, tubules meeting the ground at an angle that does not build a strong functional caudal hoof…

…and then a huge mass of toe that has been tripping this horse up 😢

The heels may be the perfect measurement but the heel quarters are running longer!

What do you see? What does you intuition tell you?

Tara 💕

I didn’t give in and cut them 😅

I didn’t give in and cut them 😅
