If you're living in Spain or planning to move here, you'll often hear the word “puente” — but what does it really mean?
In Spain, a puente (literally “bridge”) refers to a long weekend created when holidays fall close to the weekend. Many people take extra days off to “bridge” the gap between the holiday and the weekend, creating a mini-vacation.
And December has one of the most famous puentes of the year:
📅 December 6th – Constitution Day
Celebrates the approval of the Spanish Constitution of 1978.
It’s a national holiday honoring democracy and modern Spain.
📅 December 8th – Immaculate Conception
A traditional religious celebration across the country, with local festivities and cultural events.
Because these two holidays fall within the same week, Spain enters full puente mode:
✨ Families travel
✨ Cities decorate for Christmas
✨ Streets fill with festive atmosphere
But it's also important to know:
⚠️ Many shops, offices, banks, town halls and immigration offices will be closed or have reduced hours.
⚠️ Administrative tasks and appointments may be delayed.
Understanding Spain’s puentes is part of adapting to the culture — and planning your paperwork!
