Although Marlon's body condition has already improved a lot he is currently still on extra food, and goes through almost a bag of pellets a week.

Pavo Complete is developed for horses and ponies who need to lose weight, but as donkeys have a much more efficient digestive system it is also perfect for donkeys who need to gain a few kilos. A feed of cereals (which is high in sugars and starches) is not adequate even for underweight donkeys, and could lead to all sorts of new health problems. It would be like fattening up a skinny child with candy!🍭🍬🍫

Desafortunadamente, la herida de la pata de Marlon empeoró y tuvimos que volver a vendarla. Hoy elegimos un azul elegante a juego con su cabestro, ¡así que luce aún más elegante para la Semana Santa!😍 A pesar de su naturaleza nerviosa, Marlon ha tolerado los tratamientos continuos como un campeón.💪🏻

Unfortunately, Marlon's leg wound took a turn for the worse and we have had to start bandaging his leg again. Today we chose stylish blue to match his halter, so he looks even more stylish than usual for the Holy Week holidays!😍 Despite his nervous nature, Marlon has been tolerating the continued treatments like a champion!💪🏻

We still hope Marlon will not need any further vet treatments, but we will need to see how the wound develops in the next days.🤞🏻

LA REHABILITACIÓN DE MARLON

Marlon tenía algunos problemas físicos evidentes que requerían atención, pero la rehabilitación de animales rescatados va más allá. Mientras lo ayudábamos a ganar peso y recuperarse de sus cirugías, también trabajamos para que recuperara la confianza en las personas y se acostumbrara a las rutinas diarias de cuidado. Siempre con mucho amor, paciencia y determinación.

MARLON'S REHABILITATION

Marlon had some obvious physical issues that required attention, but the rehabilitation of rescued animals involves much more than that. While we helped him gain weight and recover from his surgeries, we also worked to help him regain his trust in people and become accustomed to the daily care routines. Always with lots of love, patience, and determination.

Marlon is already much calmer and more confident; he's a very intelligent donkey, and we're super proud of him!❤️🤗

¡TENEMOS AYUDA!

Desde hace un par de semanas vienen a ayudarnos Susan y Mark dos veces a la semana. Limpian el establo, recogen c**a del prado, ayudan a mover la cerca eléctrica o lo que sea necesario hacer. Y claro que también pasan tiempo con Marlon y Sueve y nos ayudan a socializarlos.

Hoy construyeron una puerta en el establo. Muy práctico cuando tenemos que separar los b***os durante tiempos de lluvia. Por ejemplo cuando Marlon recibe su pienso extra. ¡Muchas gracias Susan y Mark por vuestra ayuda!

WE'VE GOT HELP!

Since a couple of weeks Susan and Mark are helping us out twice a week. They clean the stable, pick up p**p from the meadow, help move the electric fence or do whatever needs to be done. And of course they are also passing time with Marlon and Sueve and help us to socialise them.

Today they built a gate inside the stable. Very handy when we have to separate the donkeys during rainy weather. For example when Marlon gets his extra feed. Thanks so much Susan and Mark, for your help!

LAS MEJORES FOTOS DE ANTES Y DESPUÉS

Marlon ya está con nosotras más que 4 meses. Cuando le rescatamos en octubre de 2024 estaba claramente demasiado delgado. Por lo tanto, le desparasitamos y comenzamos a darle comida extra. Le damos un tipo de pienso sin cereales, que se usa para caballos con sobrepeso. Debido a la digestión altamente eficiente de los b***os, para ellos funciona incluso para ganar peso.

El sistema digestivo del b***o está diseñado para procesar el forraje fibroso y bajo en calorías de las zonas desérticas. Un b***o joven y sano que no necesita ganar peso suele necesitar solo paja, paja, paja, un poco de hierba y/o pasto y un bloque mineral. Nada más.

Alimentarlos con pienso demasiado rico en azúcar, almidón y/o proteínas puede causar numerosos problemas de salud, como obesidad, laminitis (una inflamación dolorosa de las "láminas" de los cascos), y diversos (otros) trastornos metabólicos.

Por este motivo, también tenemos que tener cuidado con la hierba fresca, ya que contiene mucho azúcar. Suele ser recomendable restringir el acceso al pasto en zonas muy verdes, como Asturias.

Las necesidades nutricionales de los b***os cambian a lo largo de las estaciones y sus vidas. Siempre debemos que controlar el peso de los b***os, para saber si su alimentación es adecuada, y para detectar precozmente cualquier problema de salud. Por lo tanto, medimos la circunferencia abdominal de los b***os cada mes.

Marlon ya se ve mucho mejor, así que pronto comenzaremos a reducir su comida extra. 😊

Seguimos mejorando los cascos de Sueve 💪

Ambas fotos son de hoy, antes y después del tratamiento. Sueve está en un camino largo, pero sus cascos ya son muchos mejores que cuando le rescatamos en verano 2024.

PRIMER RECORTE DE CASCOS PARA PINTÓN Y NEGRÓN

El fin de semana pasado el podólogo visitó a Negron y Pintón en su casa de acogida. Era una visita muy esperada: los cascos de Negrón estaban muy largos, y desafortunadamente las radiografías que le tomó el mes pasado mostraban que tiene laminitis. Por lo tanto, la ayuda experta de nuestro podólogo Daniel Rodriguez Lucas era muy bienvenida. No le dimos una misión fácil: su dueño anterior ya nos dijo que Negrón no permite que le levanten los cascos. Pero con muchísima paciencia y dedicación logró recortar los cascos de ambos burritos.🙏👏

Negrón necesitará acostumbrarse a sus "nuevos" cascos y necesitará recortes regulares durante unos meses, para corregirlos poco a poco. Mientras tanto, su fantástica familia de acogida está muy dedicada a que ambos chicos se acostumbren a ser manipulados, para que las futuras visitas del podólogo y veterinario, con suerte, no sean tan estresantes.💪

FIRST HOOF TRIM FOR NEGRÓN AND PINTÓN

Last weekend the podiatrist visited Negron and Pintón at their foster home. It was a much awaited visit: Negrón's hoofs were very long, and unfortunately the x-rays taken by Algara Centro Veterinario last month showed that he has laminitis. Therefore, the expert help of our podiatrist Dani was very welcome. We didn't give him an easy mission: his previous owner already told us that Negrón doesn't allow his hoofs to be lifted. But with a lot of patience and dedication he managed to trim the hoofs of both donkeys.🙏👏

Negrón will need to get used to his "new" hoofs and will need regular trims for a few months, to correct them little by little. In the meantime, their fantastic foster family is very dedicated to getting both boys used to being handled, so that future podiatrist and vet visits will hopefully not be so stressful.💪

Thank you so much Dani for your time, patience and dedication, and for sharing your knowledge and experience! And thanks also to Negrón and Pintón's foster family, Bruno and Bea, for everything you do for these two long-eared gentlemen. We feel very lucky to be able to count on you! 🙏❤️

A PERSISTENT WOUND

It has been more than 11 weeks since Marlon got surgery. But his leg wound is unfortunately very persistent. He has had bandages in all colours of the rainbow already and it seems a never ending story. But we'll continue on with the treatment! 💪

The wonderful vets of Algara Centro Veterinario have also visited Marlon a million times by now. We are very happy with what they have been doing, but it is also a big expense for us.

¡BIENVENIDOS, PINTÓN Y NEGRÓN!

Os presentamos a estos dos guapos y encantadores mayores, Pintón y Negrón.🥰 La semana pasada, justo después de Navidad, los recibimos en una de nuestras casas de acogida, en Piloña.

Pintón y Negrón ya tienen bastante experiencia vital; Pintón, que tiene más de 30 años, pasó sus años de juventud en un circo. No son parientes, pero han vivido juntos la mayor parte de sus vidas y son inseparables.

Ambos son b***os muy cariñosos, pero Negrón no permite que nadie le levante las patas. Por eso tiene los cascos muy largos. Aún no sabemos si la causa de este comportamiento es mental (trauma), o físico (dolor). Pronto les visitará el podólogo, que con su paciencia y conocimientos intentará ayudarle. Una veterinaria equina también les hará una revisión general y un tratamiento de desparasitación. ¡Os mantendremos informados de su evolución!

WELCOME, PINTÓN AND NEGRÓN!

We are excited to introduce these two handsome and charming seniors, Pintón y Negrón.🥰 Last week, right after Christmas, we welcomed them in one of our foster homes, in Piloña.

Pintón y Negrón have quite a bit of life experience already; Pintón, who is 30+ years old, spent his youth in a circus. They are not related, but have lived together most of their lives and are inseparable.

Both are very loving donkeys, but Negrón does not allow anyone to lift his feet. For this reason, his hoofs are very long. We are not sure yet if the underlying problem is mental (trauma) or physical (pain). Soon the podiatrist will visit them, and with his patience and knowledge we are hopeful he can help Negrón. An equine vet will also give them a general revision and worming treatment. We will keep you updated on their progress!

¡Estos 2 guajes están en adopción! Después de un comienzo difícil merecen una vida feliz. Son 2 jóvenes castrados de 8 años que buscan una finca con mucho terreno para explorar y correr. No tiene que ser solo prado, un poco de bosque y/o terreno rocoso incluso mejor. Son chicos muy cariñosos, pero también un poco bulliciosos (totalmente normal para su edad). Por eso buscamos adoptantes que no tengan miedo de manejarlos. Por supuesto con mucho cariño, pero es importante que establezcas límites claros.

Ahora mismo están casi listos para ir a su nuevo hogar. Todavía estamos tratando unas heridas de Marlon y estamos enseñándolos a acostumbrarse a la limpieza de sus cascos. Además, Marlon todavía tiene que ganar peso y Sueve todavía necesita visitas del podólogo mensuales, pero son cosas que se puede continuar cuando estén con sus adoptantes.

La adopción no va de un día al otro. Pedimos que rellenes un formulario para saber más de tu situación. Después planeamos una visita a tu finca y claro que también puedes venir a conocer a Marlon y Sueve. Están en Cangas de Onís. Cuando seguimos adelante firmamos un contrato y pagas la tasa de adopción (75€ por b***o). El adoptante también paga los costes del transporte (nosotras podemos ayudar a encontrar un transportista).

Requisitos:
- Mínimo 4000 m2 de terreno (cuanto más, cuanto mejor)
- Un establo donde puedan dormir y refugiarse de la lluvia y del viento
- Que adoptes Marlon y Sueve juntos (ya son los mejores amigos)
- Tener CEA (permiso)
- Estar dispuesto y capaz de comprometerse durante los próximos 30 años

UP FOR ADOPTION: MARLON AND SUEVE

These 2 lads are up for adoption! After a difficult start they deserve a happy life. Marlon and Sueve are 2 young and castrated boys of 8 years old, who are looking for a home with lots of land to explore and run around. This land doesn't have to consist of only meadows, if it includes some forest and/or rocky terrain, it would even be better. Both donkeys are very cuddly, but also a bit boisterous (totally normal for that age). That's why we are looking for adopters who are not afraid to handle them. Of course in a loving way, but it is important to set clear limits.

At the moment they are almost ready to move to their new home. We are still treating Marlon's wounds and giving them hoof training (so it would be easier to clean their hoofs). Next to that, Marlon still has to gain more weight and Sueve still needs monthly visits of the podologist, but these are things adopters can continue with.

Adoptions don't happen from one day to the next. We will ask you to fill in a form to get to know your situation. After that we'll plan a visit to their possible new home and of course you would be most welcome to get to know Marlon and Sueve. They are in Cangas de Onís. The last step would be signing a contract and the payment of the adoption fee of €75 per donkey. The adopter also pays for the transport costs (we can help with finding a carrier).

Requirements:

- A stable where they can sleep and refuge from rain and wind
- Adopting them together (they are best friends already)

Hoy Marlon y Sueve tuvieron su siguiente cita con el podólogo. Sueve en particular llegó con los cascos en muy mal estado, y estamos trabajando para corregirlos poco a poco. Además, todavía no está acostumbrado a los recortes de cascos, por lo que tenemos la suerte de contar con , un podólogo equino con muchísimo conocimiento y paciencia.

No podemos enfatizar lo suficiente la importancia de un buen cuidado de los cascos. Para el bienestar de tus b***os:

- organiza recortes regulares por parte de un podólogo calificado con conocimientos sobre b***os
- limpia y revisa los cascos regularmente
- aliménta tus b***os con una dieta adecuada para b***os (evitando demasiados azúcares y almidones).

Today Marlon and Sueve had their next appointment with the podiatrist. Sueve especially arrived with his hoofs in a very bad state, and we are working to correct this little by little. He is also not used yet to the hoof trims, so we are very lucky to be able to rely on an equine podiatrist with lots of experience and at least as much patience.

We cannot stress enough how important proper hoof care is. For your donkeys' wellbeing:

- organise regular trims by a qualified equine podiatrist with knowledge of donkeys
- clean and check the hoofs regularly
- feed your donkeys a proper diet (avoiding too many sugars and starches)

FELIZ NOTICIA: ¡MARLON YA NO ESTÁ SOLO, Y SUEVE TAMPOCO! ❤️

Ayer fue un día especial para Marlon, y también para Sueve, que hasta ahora vivía en una de nuestras casas de acogida. Ambos b***os estaban enteros cuando llegaron a nosotras, y por lo tanto no podían estar con otro(s) b***o(s). Es una situación triste para un b***o, porque los b***os son animales de manada y necesitan la compañía de otros b***os para sentirse seguros y felices. Por esta razón (entre otras) castramos a ambos, como a todos los b***os machos.

Ayer Sueve se mudó de su casa de acogida para unirse a Marlon. Estábamos un poco nerviosas por cómo responderían estos dos b***os jóvenes, pero todo fue mucho mejor de lo que esperábamos. Ambos b***os estaban muy entusiasmados, pero aparte de algunos empujones juguetones y comportamientos dominantes normales (¡está claro que Sueve es el que manda!), parecieron aceptar su nueva compañía casi al instante. ¡Claramente, tanto Sueve como Marlon están muy felices de tener por fin un amigo!😊

Seguiremos ayudando a Marlon a ganar peso y recuperarse de sus cirugías. Los cascos de Sueve siguen necesitando atención, fueron severamente descuidados y necesitan recortes regulares por parte de un podólogo experto para recuperarse. Con el tiempo, encontraremos un hogar de adopción para estos dos guapos. Mientras tanto, ¡estamos seguras de que pronto serán inseparables!

HAPPY NEWS: MARLON IS NO LONGER ALONE, NOR IS SUEVE!

Yesterday was a special day for Marlon, and also for Sueve, who has been living in one of our foster homes. Both these donkeys were uncastrated when they came to us, and therefore could not be kept with another donkey. That is a sad situation for a donkey, because donkeys are herd animals and need the company of other donkeys to feel safe and happy. For this reason (amongst others) we castrated them both, as we do for all male donkeys.

Yesterday Sueve moved from his foster home to join Marlon. We were a bit nervous how these two young donkeys would respond to each other, but the introduction went much better than we could have hoped. Both donkeys were very excited, but apart from some playful pushes and normal dominant behaviours (it is clear Sueve is the boss!) they seemed to accept their new company almost instantly. Clearly, both Sueve and Marlon are just very happy to finally have a friend!😊

We will continue to help Marlon gain weight and recover from his surgeries. Sueve´s hoofs continue to need attention, they were severely neglected and need regular trims by a skilled podologist to recover. In time, we will find a beautiful adoption home for these two handsome donkeys. In the meantime, we are sure they will soon be inseparable!

We want to again thank Sueve´s foster family, Julia and Brian, who until now took care of Sueve with such love, patience and dedication. Without them, none of this would have been possible!🙏💚

Marlon ha renovado su suscripción a la veterinaria. Hace cuatro semanas tuvo tres operaciones a la vez. Dos heridas están muy bien, pero la tercera herida infectada... Entonces el pobre está condenado a 10 días más de antibiótica. Y seguimos tratando sus heridas. 💪

Marlon renewed his subscription to the vet. Four weeks ago he had three surgeries at once. Two wounds are looking really good, but the third one got infected... So the poor boy has been convicted to 10 more days on antibiotics. And we'll keep on treating his wounds.💪

Seguimos con los tratamientos postoperatorios de Marlon, que incluyen una refrescante limpieza y "masaje" diaria con la manguera. Al principio no le gustaba mucho, pero ahora está mucho más tranquilo cuando lo tratamos. Después disfruta de un premio delicioso de pienso para b***os, que también necesita para ganar peso.💪❤️

MARLON RECUPERANDO PASO A PASO

Estabamos demasiada ocupadas para poneros al día sobre Marlon... Ha necesitado cuidados intensivos después de sus operaciones hace casi 2 semanas.

Today was another day of treatments. The podologist continued his work on his hoofs. That is something Marlon isn't especially fond of, but good hoof care is very important for donkeys.

When he was just enjoying another meal of straw, his next practitioner arrived. Lucía, the vet of Algara Centro Veterinario, came by to check on and treat his several wounds.
