With the influx of back yard breeding and many dogs coming to me with poor genetics, here is why It’s Important to Support Ethical Breeders, and How to Spot the Difference
If you’re planning to welcome a dog into your family, understanding the difference between ethical breeders and backyard breeders is vital. Ethical breeding isn’t about producing puppies for profit, it’s about protecting the health, temperament, and future of the breed.
What Ethical Breeders Do:
• They breed with a clear purpose: to improve and preserve the breed’s health, soundness, and temperament.
• Each pairing is carefully planned, considering health testing, temperament, and genetic compatibility.
• They raise puppies in safe, stimulating environments so they grow into well-balanced, confident dogs.
• They stand by their dogs for life, offering guidance, support, and a safety net if circumstances change.
• They often show, train, or work their dogs to prove quality and temperament before breeding.
Why Temperament Matters:
A well-bred dog isn’t just physically sound, they have the right temperament for their breed and for family life. Ethical breeders focus on producing dogs that are steady, sociable, and true to the breed’s nature. Poor breeding practices can lead to fear, anxiety, or aggression, which is unfair on both the dog and the owner.
The Problem with Backyard Breeders:
• They often breed without understanding genetics, temperament, or breed standards.
• Dogs are often kept or raised in poor conditions, with little socialisation.
• Their goal is to sell puppies quickly, not to improve the breed.
• Health and behavioural issues are common, leading to heartbreak and expense for new owners.
How to Recognise a Responsible Breeder:
• They are open and proud to show you how their dogs live.
• They can explain why they chose a particular pairing and what they hope to achieve from it.
• They provide proof of health testing and are transparent about results.
• They ask you questions to make sure their puppy will suit your home and lifestyle.
• They will have a contract in place, which includes having to return the dog if you can no longer care for it
• They will work/show and title their dogs, to fully help better the breed
When you choose an ethical breeder, you’re not just buying a puppy – you’re supporting someone dedicated to protecting and bettering the breed. It’s an investment in a healthy, well-adjusted companion and a stand against careless breeding that harms dogs and damages public trust.
Adopt or shop responsibly.
