Historien om Bluemoon Animalcenter ❤️
Monique Carrera El Karem Founder of Bluemoon Animal Center in Hurghada
Monique moved from Switzerland to Egypt with her husband Salah El Karem. After settling in Hurghada, they founded Bluemoon Animal Center in Hurghada, in 2002. The built the animal center, which she refers to as a farm, from scratch.
The shelter is a refuge for mainly cats and dogs. It also provides safe haven to mules, horses, and even a camel, and 35 donkeys rescued from the streets after the ban of using donkey carts. They also have lots of goats and sheep and 7 monkeys.
A total of about 240 animals, many are abandoned by their owners, Monica says.
For 21 years, the shelter has been providing the animals with food, shelter and medicine. The main aim of the animal center is to neuter stray animals to decrease their numbers, hence reduce the number of rescued animals.
The center also provides adoption services to the rescued animals. After the injured rescued animals are treated, they are allowed back to the streets. The ones with severe injuries or ailments are kept on the farm until they adopted. Monica was invited to speak in the parliament about animal rescue.
The center also provide classes for school children to raise their awareness about animals and to educate them on how to care for animals.
