Almost everytime the word "snake" is mentioned or when there is a discussion about keeping these animals as pets, the very first comment I hear is "but aren't these venomous?!".
Well, snakes are misunderstood & often maligned, primarily out of ignorance about their true nature & their position in the ecosystem (food chain).
لا تكاد أن تذكر كلمة "ثعبان" أو يأتي الحديث عنها كحيوانات أليفة إلا و أسمع التعليق: "أليست هذه الحيوانات سامة؟"
غالبا ما يساء فهم الثعابين أو تتلقى نقدا سلبيا, و ذلك بسبب الجهل بطبيعتها و بمكاناتها في النظام البيئي (السلسلة الغذائية).
Most species are non-venomous & those that have venom use it primarily to kill prey than for self defense.
Some possess venom potent enough to cause painfull injury or death to humans.
Non-venomous snakes either swallow prey alive or kill it by constriction.
أغلب أنواع الثعابين غير سامة و إذا نظرنا إلى الأنواع السامة, نجد أنها تستخدم السم لقتل الفريسة كسبب اساسي وليس للدفاع عن النفس.
بعض الأنواع تمتلك سم ذو قوة كافية لإحداث إصابات مؤلمة للإنسان أو حتى الموت.
أما الثعابين الغير سامة, فإما أن تبتلع الفريسة حية أو تقتلها عن طريق الإنقباض.
After reading some studies & checking different sources, I concluded the following:
-There exist somewhere between 3400 & 3700 species of snakes.
-Between 600 & 725 are venomous.
-& less than 300 pose a significant health risk to humans. (I can already guess what you are thinking..."so not all venomous snakes are dangerous to humans??"....the answer is Yes)
So it is safe to say that less than 22% of snakes are venomous & less than 8% pose a threat to humans.
بعد قراءة بعض الأبحاث و التحقق من مصادر مختلفة، توصلت إلى ما يلي:
-أن هناك ما بين ال3400 و ال3700 نوع من الثعابين.
-منهم ما بين ال600 و ال725 سام.
-و أقل من 300 نوع يشكل خطر واضح لصحة الإنسان.
(و أستطيع تخمين ما تفكر فيه الآن و هو: "أتريد أن تقول أن ليس كل الثعابين السامة تشكل خطر على صحة الإنسان؟"....
الإجابة: "نعم, أقول ذلك")
لذلك من الآمن أن أقول أن أقل من 22٪ من الثعابين سامة وأقل من 8٪ تشكل تهديدًا للبشر.
In Egypt, there are 21 species (including subspecies) of which 8 are venomous:
في مصر, هناك 21 نوع من الثعابين (بما فيهم من أنواع فرعية), منهم 8 ساميين:
Venomous (السام):
-Egyptian Cobra (Naja haje) = كوبرا مصرية
-Nubian Spitting Cobra (Naja nubiae) =كوبرا بخاخة
-Black Desert Cobra (Walterinnesia aegyptia) = كوبرا الصحراء )برجيل(
-Horned Viper (Cerastes cerastes) = حية مقرنة )طريشة(
-Sahara Sand Viper (Cerastus vipera) = حية قرعاء
-Persian Horned Viper (Pseudocerastes persicus) = حية مقرنة كاذبة
-Egyptian Saw-scaled Viper (Echis pyramidum) = حية غريبة سوداء
-Painted Saw-scaled Viper (Echis coloratus) = حية غريبة حمراء
Non-venomous (الغير سام):
-Flower's Racer (Platyceps florulentus) = ازرود
-Sahara Racer (Platyceps saharicus) = ازرود جبلي
-Common Egg Eater (Dasypeltis scabra) = حية فارغة
-False Cobra (Rhagerhis moilensis) = كوبرا كاذبة )أبو العيون(
-Hissing Sand Snake (Psammophis sibilans) = أبو السيور
-Egyptian Sand Racer (Psammophis aegyptius shokari) = هرسين
-Clifford's Rat Snake (Spalerosophis diadem) = الأرقم الأحمر
-Dice Snake (Natrix tessellata) = ثعبان النرد
-Cairo Blind Snake (Myriopholis cairi) = الباح الدودي
-Egyptian Sand Boa (Gongylophis colubinus) = دساس صعيدي
-Javelin Sand Boa ( Eryx jaculus) = دساس بلدي
-Egyptian Cat Snake (Telescopus Dhara) = ثعبان جداري
-Eastern Montpellier Snake (Malpolon insignitus) = ثعبان خضيري
