This is bad news.

The residents and guests of the zoo need more space, which can only be accomplished by DECREASING, not increasing, the number of species.

And, as we've said before, an urban zoo is no place for elephants!

The long-awaited renovations to the Giza Zoo begin today.

Funded by foreign private investors and carried out by the military, will they really make things better for animals, staff, and working-class Egyptians who desperately need urban green space?

Finished replacing my stone underwater viewing gallery with this lovely three-storey building in the lake!

The top floor is an open-air café with a great view of the hippos and the Eiffel bridge, the middle has a gift shop and ATMs, and the bottom remains underwater viewing with a hippo education center.

The shelves used in the café (and in the hippo shelter) were made by Jon Eros, and items in the gift shop were pilfered from creations by Haribo and Moving Target. All were found in the Steam Workshop.

I think we're finally ready to move on to our second habitat. What should it be?

After a short break, we're back to the Giza Zoo!

Still fiddling with the entrance gates, and replacing my ugly stone underwater viewing gallery in the hippo lake with something a little more elegant. It will include a gift shop and open-air café. Work in progress!

Almost finished the hippo habitat, finally! The zoo's first habitat, it is based on the existing lake and features a custom-made enclosure and underwater viewing gallery. The nearby Eiffel bridge offers a great elevated view.

The male, of course, is named El Sayed Eshta—Mr. Cream!

Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the suspension bridge in Giza Zoo was completed in 1879, a decade before his tower in Paris. It was reportedly the world's first elevated viewing area in a zoo, although access has been closed since the 1990s.

Naeema, the last remaining elephant at the Giza Zoo, died in October 2019. And we will not be replacing her.

Aside from the prohibitive cost, there are many reasons why elephants don't belong in urban zoos. The space will likely be used for our many lions, who desperately need it.
