The Pied Piper of Brazil - except he lures hundreds of cattle!
It was one of those absolutely unforgettable moments. The head Pantaneiro swings the horn around from his back, raises it to his lips and begins to blow. Across the vast field, where I can’t even make out the fences, hundreds of cattle lift their heads and slowly begin to walk towards him.

He sets off, blowing his horn every so often, and the cattle simply follow. It’s mesmerising. And me? Along with the other Pantaneiros, I’m completely redundant!

I’d imagined myself hurtling around on my zippy Criollo horse, chasing cattle from behind. Instead, the cattle follow calmly and our only job is to make sure no calf ends up on the wrong side of a fence when we eventually reach a gate.

I didn’t take this photo, nor did I take a single photo or video of the moment. I was simply too blown away by what I was witnessing. Some things are so extraordinary that you forget all about your camera and just live them.

Our ‘gauchos’, known here in Ecuador as ‘Chagras’, are indispensable. Having saddled up our horses, they guide us expertly through tricky terrain leading a spare horse, replacing a lost horseshoe, helping guests…all the time with their warm friendly disposition, proud to show riders their remote lands. 🏔️
