Too Hot for All That Fur? How Much Heat Can a Tibetan Terrier Handle?
When the temperatures rise, the pavement starts to shimmer and the air gets heavy, many dog owners begin to worry. Is my dog’s long, dense coat too much in this heat? Especially with breeds like the Tibetan Terrier or Lhasa Apso, it seems obvious: all that fur must be making them suffer. The logical next step? Shaving. After all, we want our dogs to feel better – not worse.
At first glance, these dogs look like walking wool blankets. Thick, fluffy, heavy. But if we look a little deeper, we discover that these breeds originated in regions where the sun beats down mercilessly during the day, the wind whips across dry plains, and the nights get bitterly cold. The Tibetan Plateau is not a gentle climate. It’s extreme – and these dogs were made for it.
What if their fur isn’t the problem… but part of the solution?
What if our modern lifestyle, poor grooming practices, and well-meaning but misguided interventions like shaving are actually what disrupts the natural balance their coats were built to maintain?
🧡 Tomorrow morning, Part 2 will go live – diving into how this coat really works, why shaving often does more harm than good, and what you can do instead to help your long-haired dog stay healthy and comfortable through summer.
