Sumatran Tiger Achilles Now on Show at Prague Zoo❗️

Prague Zoo has introduced its new Sumatran tiger. Nine-year-old Achilles arrived from Howletts Wild Animal Park in England to join four-year-old female Surya. It is hoped they will have cubs here in Prague. The charismatic Londoner likes to observe his surroundings from raised platforms, when bathing he enters the water with his hind quarters so as not to get his front paws wet, and, according to his former keepers, his absolute favourite perfume is Chanel Coco. However, the main thing about him is he is Prague’s hope for breeding this critically endangered subspecies of tiger.

On Saturday, 26 July, slalom canoeist and Olympic champion Jiří Prskavec Jr. symbolically ‘christened’ a young bison at Prague Zoo. The five-week-old female was named Prskavka (Sparkler).

Prague Zoo organised this year’s first release of crucian carp. It took place in the Prague district of Michle. Approximately 250 small fish that had been bred at Prague Zoo were released into the Interlov retention pond on the edge of Kunratický Forest. This critically endangered species, which disappeared from the Czech countryside mainly due to the loss of its natural habitat and competition from the invasive Prussian carp, has been returning to Czech water courses since 2022. Today’s release makes it 26 locations where Prague Zoo and its partners have released the carp. These locations are now home to tens of thousands of fish.

With great joy and pride, we announce that Oyuusaikhan Ganbaatar—director of the non-profit organization We Help Them Survive—Mongolia, former head of the Gobi B Strictly Protected Area, and our long-time friend and colleague—has received a state award from President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh on the occasion of the Naadam holiday. The award was given in recognition of his outstanding efforts to restore the population of the Przewalski’s horse and successfully return it to the wild. 💪

Oyuusaikhan Ganbaatar has dedicated an incredible amount of energy, time, and commitment to this mission—and we are deeply grateful to him for it. His mention of Zoo Praha during the award ceremony is a great honor for us and a testament to the strength of our long-term cooperation. 🤝

Oyuusaikhan Ganbaatar currently serves as the director of We Help Them Survive—Mongolia, an organization established to prepare for the future reintroduction of wild horses to Eastern Mongolia, specifically to the Valley of the Monasteries. We extend our heartfelt thanks for this vision and his tireless work. 🙌

Over the summer holidays, all visitors will pay just CZK 100 for entry to the zoo after 5 pm.
👉The discount is valid from July 1 to August 31 and applies to physical tickets bought at the box office at any entrance between 5 pm. and 7 pm.
👉 The gates to the zoo, pavilions and restaurants close at 7 pm, but the grounds are open until 9 pm.
