Poison Dart frogs species and locales come from different regions of Latin America in many different colors,patterns,sizes and behavior…some are shy or bold they can live for 10-15 years in captivity and 15-20 years in the wild.
Dart frogs in the wild contain poison which they obtain from some species of insects and they transfer their poison to their predators through their skin by touch which can cause health issues or death.
In the hobby Poisonous dart frogs are not poisonous since they can get any of the poisonous insects they eat therefore they became a very popular pet in the hobby but they are also in great danger if we touch them with bare hands since they are very sensitive to chemicals, creams and many other substances that we use daily so it’s better not to touch them and certainly we can’t play with them like with many other pets.
They do like humidity in a range of 70-90% they can accept 55-60% if some water dish is present so they can absorb water through their skin since they don’t drink water……acceptable temperatures of 24-26c are optimal but they can also accept higher temperatures from my experience if fresh air circulation is available or provided.
They mostly eat flightless fruit flies which can be obtained at your local pet store which have to be dusted with Calcium plus so frogs can get their calcium and vitamins-and thrive in a terrarium.
The terrarium has to be setup properly with drainage,substrate and leaf litter so the cleaning crew ( isopods and springtails) will keep it clean and healthy so the various plants can also thrive and give your dart frogs a realistic piece of the tropical jungle and rain forest where they come from.
Dart frogs don’t need expensive equipment requirements which will be mentioned in a later post.
They are active during the day and they retreat to their safe place during night which means they won’t bother you during night time and while they do call during daytime so they can attract a female their call is not loud or annoying and some species call is extremely low and enjoyable!
