An electroretinogram (ERG) with no response (flat line) means that the retina at the back of the eye is non functional. In a normal eye with cataract enough light still passes through the cloudy lens to elicit an electrical response from a healthy retina. A completely flat ERG confirms that the blindness or vision loss is not just due to cataract but is caused by underlying retinal failure so cataract surgery is not recommended . Removing the cloudy lens won't restore vision if the underlying structure responsible for sending visuals signals to the brain is permanently damaged 🐶🐕

Pushok's journey with us before, during and after his cataract surgery. He underwent ERG testing prior surgery to assess proper function of both retinas, we performed phacoemulcification cataract surgery on his right eye one week later and that eye was fully visual 10 days after the procedure. It was quite a challenging surgery as Pushok was only 7 months old and already blind on both eyes when cataract was diagnosed. At this age the cataract is paediatric( juvenile) and you can get significant inflammation postoperatively which was managed successfully. Paediatric cataracts in cats are quite rare especially when no underlying cause is found ( genetic origin). 😺🐈‍⬛

This is a very good example of how a very nasty ulcer can heal totally with proper medical treatment without the need of any surgical intervention

How can an endocrinopathy cause sudden vision loss? Mairyloo was referred for sudden vision loss investigations to our clinic. Her ophthalmic examination was unremarkable, ACTH test and ERG was done on the same day. Mairyloo was diagnosed with Cushing's syndrome and SARDS (sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome), these two diseases are linked in dogs with shared symptoms like excessive drinking, weight gain followed by sudden blindness. Mairyloo is one of many cases referred to us where blindness is related to a systemic disease so for any eye case the overall health of the animal should always be assessed. 🦮

Importance of retinal proper functional assessment prior cataract surgery. Bruno was referred from Nicosia for an ophthalmic examination and ERG (electroretinography test) in order to proceed on cataract surgery on his right eye. Ophthalmic examination showed attenuated retinal vessels and ERG on the right eye was abnormal indicating a non functional retina. Springer Spaniels are predisposed to PRA ( Progressive retinal atrophy ) leading to secondary cataracts so even if cataract is operated the eye will still remain non visual

Postganglionic ( Third order ) Horner's Syndrome in a domestic short hair female cat. Note the constricted pupil, elevated nictitans membrane and enophthalmus on the left eye and reversal of these clinical signs in less than 20 minutes after topical phenylephrine application 😺

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant eyelid tumour in cats. It usually appears in cats who live outdoors and are exposed to direct sunlight. This type of cancer can also be present on nasal planum and ear tips where hair is more fine. In all these areas the cancer appears scabby, pinkish and ulcerated.
