The Story of Mama Mula 🤍

15 days ago, Mama Mula was most likely dumped at the rescue center. She was found wandering around the property — skinny, exhausted, heavily pregnant, but incredibly sweet. We brought her to my quarantine area so she could be spayed the next day.

Mama had other plans. That same night, she gave birth to 9 puppies. Sadly, 1 puppy passed away shortly after birth, and during the first few days we lost 2 more. Mama was extremely skinny and likely didn’t have enough nutrients for such a large litter. Those first days were stressful and emotional.

Because I didn’t know Mama yet and she was very protective, I was careful not to move the puppies too quickly. Slowly, we started building trust. I covered her area for more privacy, moved the puppies into a safer raised basket, and Mama began to relax more and more.

Now, the remaining 6 puppies are doing amazing and have started opening their eyes. Mama wags her tail every time she sees me and lets me cuddle her babies while she feeds them or takes a well deserved nap beside them. Watching her realize she’s finally safe has been really special 🤍

We gave the puppies Papiamentu-inspired fish names: Mahi, Buni, Gutu, Wahoo, Karko & Pulpo — 3 girls and 3 boys 🐟

Mama Mula will be spayed in a few weeks and, once the puppies are old enough, they will all be available for adoption. For now, she’s simply an amazing mama doing her best for her babies.

In about 1–2 weeks the puppies will likely start eating wet food, and we could really use help with food and medical care for Mama and the pups. Donations can be made through RPC or directly through me 🤍

Life update

The past 1.5 months have been a whirlwind.
Since moving onto the RPC property, I’ve been slowly building a safe place for rescue dogs. The first puppy area is now in use and slowly coming together, and the first separate garden for rescue and hotel dogs is finally becoming a reality.

Lotje — a dog from a well known dumping site where my dog also lived for over 6 years — is finally safe. We care for and sterilize the dogs there, but sadly dogs still keep disappearing or getting poisoned. After being missing for 8.5 months, she suddenly reappeared. Thanks to Martine and Karin, she was caught safely. She is terrified of people, but she now has her own safe space in my garden.

In my second week here, two dachshunds suddenly appeared on the property, most likely dumped. After a lot of patience I managed to catch them. They are now called Obi & Ovi, and Ovi has already found a home.

Sweet little Jinthe, a blind puppy, came to me to see if she could still live a comfortable life. Sadly there was much more going on medically and despite medication she was in too much pain. Together with the vet we made the heartbreaking decision to let her go. Run free, little girl 🌈🕊️

Miso, a tiny puppy who arrived on King’s Day, has since found a lovely home on the island. Last week little Truffel was found skinny and weak by tourists and is now safely recovering here before becoming available for adoption.

And last Sunday, a heavily pregnant sweet dog was dumped on the property. We placed her in my quarantine area and planned to have her sterilized the next day, but she had other plans and gave birth that same night to 9 puppies. Sadly 3 didn’t make it, but mama Mula and the 6 remaining puppies are doing well 🤍

There is still so much left to build, both inside and outside, but step by step we’ll get there.

Thank you to everyone helping, supporting and trusting me along the way 🤍
And if anyone has shade cloths, raised dog beds/stretchers or dog houses they no longer use, it would help the dogs here tremendously.

Waiti is recovering really well from her surgery 🤍
Her stitches have been removed, and it looks like no further amputation will be needed 🙏

She’s already getting used to life with one less leg, although when she gets super excited and wants to jump, she sometimes forgets she’s missing a back leg 🤭 🐾

Waiti also has a lump on her nose. We took X-rays and did a biopsy, which showed it’s a tumor—but thankfully a benign one. In theory, it should go away on its own, but no one really knows how long that will take. For now, we’re just making sure it doesn’t grow, as that could become uncomfortable for her. At the moment it does bother her a bit, but she’s managing well.

Unfortunately, her platelets have dropped again due to tick-borne disease, but this was expected according to the vet. We’ll continue her treatment with doxycycline and prednisone for now.

Waiti is such a sweet and affectionate dog, and she’s honestly doing amazing 🤍
Her owners are still involved and supportive, and they’ve also asked for help with flea and tick prevention for their other dog—which of course we’ll take care of.

I want to thank everyone again for the donations for Waiti. It truly means the world 🙏✨

Last week was a big one. Maurice and I worked so hard on the fences, while Hans made sure everything in and around the house was ready so we could finally move — I’m so, so grateful for both of them. I truly couldn’t have done this without you.

On Friday, the team installed the solar panels and we finally had electricity (best feeling ever). I’m really thankful for how fast everything was arranged and how smooth the communication was.

And then Saturday… we moved 🥹 The dogs and I are finally here. There’s still a lot to do — finishing touches on the house, creating multiple garden spaces, and slowly making it a real home (right now I’m basically living with just a bed, washing machine and fridge 😅) — but we did it.

I already notice such a difference in my own dogs. They’re calmer, more relaxed, and finally have the freedom they deserve. From “living” in my bedroom for a year to this… space, fresh air, peace. It honestly means everything.

And the little things… being able to see both the sunrise and sunset again (with an ocean view) from my porch — I missed that more than I realized.

The coming period will be all about creating beautiful gardens and building a peaceful, happy place for me and the dogs.

I’m so grateful for all the help along the way. We’re almost there 🤍

Waiti had surgery today ❤️
Because she was covered in ticks, the vet first ran a blood test to check for tick-borne disease. These diseases can cause the blood to become very thin, which increases the risk of severe bleeding during surgery.

Based on the blood results, the vet decided whether the entire leg should be amputated or only the absolutely necessary part (a smaller procedure).

Waiti unfortunately showed signs of a tick-borne disease and severe anemia, so the vet decided to amputate part of her leg, about halfway down the tibia. The surgery went well and the wound looks very clean and neat. For now, the remaining part of the leg has been left, but once Waiti has recovered and gained strength, the vet may still recommend amputating higher up at the hip. Some dogs try to walk on the stump, which can cause problems. For now we will monitor her healing and see if this step will be necessary. At the moment, we don’t expect major issues, but time will tell.

She has also started treatment for the tick-borne disease.

When she got home, we gently cleaned her up as much as possible (of course keeping the wound dry). She was covered in dead ticks, dried blood, and old scabs, so it was good to finally make her a little more comfortable.

Waiti will stay with Maurice for now. Once I move, she will come stay with me until she has fully recovered. She is incredibly sweet and so happy with even the smallest bit of attention.

We also noticed that she breathes a bit strangely through her nose and there is a small bump on it that seems to contain fluid. We will have this checked by the vet soon as well.

We are incredibly grateful for all the donations. The surgery costs have been fully covered, and it even looks like there will be enough for her aftercare and any additional examinations she might need (like her nose). Because of your support, Waiti now has a real chance at a pain-free life. ❤️

⚠️ GRAPHIC CONTENT WARNING – The photos in this post show a severe injury.
WARNING: The images in this post are difficult to look at.

Today I found her walking around with a devastating injury to her lower leg — so severe that the bone was completely exposed. It’s impossible to imagine the amount of pain she must have been in.
After speaking with her owners, they allowed me to take her so we could get her the help she desperately needs. They care about their dogs, but they have very little money and simply didn’t know how to ask for help.

Then the real challenge started: finding a veterinarian who could take her in for the night and perform an amputation.

Because of my upcoming move I currently don’t have quarantine kennels available, which makes situations like this incredibly difficult. But leaving Waiti like this was simply not an option.

I called almost every veterinary clinic on the island. The clinics we normally work with were completely full, and some others simply said: “No, you’re not a client here.” Hearing that while a dog is clearly suffering is heartbreaking.

Just when I was starting to lose hope, the last clinic that was still open agreed to help. Even though their schedule is already completely full this week, the veterinarian offered to perform an extra surgery on Friday so Waiti can finally get the help she needs. I am incredibly grateful for that.

Tonight Waiti can stay safely on Maurice’s porch, and tomorrow afternoon she will go to the clinic.

Earlier today I already covered the first veterinary visit myself (193.80 XCG) for antibiotics, pain medication and Nexgard so she could at least be more comfortable tonight.

RPC is helping cover part of the surgery, but we still need about 300 XCG to complete the total cost for her amputation.

Her owners cannot afford the surgery themselves, but letting Waiti continue to suffer like this is simply not an option. They truly love their dogs (their other two dogs are spayed and neutered) and they don’t want to lose her.

How you can help Waiti:

Meet Snoopy 🤍
A 15-year-old dog who lost her owner, her friends, her safe place… and was minutes away from euthanasia.

After her owner passed away, a family friend cared for Snoopy and two other dogs in the garden of the house. But when the property had to be emptied, no one could take them in. A vet appointment was made because there was simply no other option.

My vet called me about a sweet old dog sitting in the waiting room. The woman who brought her in was heartbroken, but she had no choice. I told them I didn’t have space yet because of my move… but I got in the car anyway.

Snoopy greeted me with a wagging tail and gentle eyes—so much love, like she had been waiting for me. And in that moment I knew she deserved more than a goodbye room. So Snoopy came home instead.

She’s calm with my dogs, grateful for every cuddle, sometimes crying softly by the door because she misses her person so much. But she’s safe now. Loved. And she will never be unwanted again.

Snoopy gets to stay with me for her final years—because minutes before death, she chose life… and I chose her. 🤍

The other two dogs thankfully found temporary places at the last moment.
I’m so grateful for everyone who keeps supporting me and these rescues… we’re getting so close. 🐾💛

House update 🏠

My house has finally arrived and is placed on the foundation. Seeing it there made everything feel real for the first time. After everything, it’s so emotional to see how close we are. I’m incredibly grateful for all the help and support I’ve already received — none of this would have been possible without you.

In the coming days we’ll unfold the house, continue building, and install the fences. Once everything is set up, the solar panels can be placed and I can finally move in — and create the safe space I’ve been working so hard for.

Yesterday, on top of everything, I rescued a 15-year-old dog from euthanasia. I’ll share his story in a later post, but moments like this remind me why I keep pushing forward.

Today the crane bill came in and the contractor also needs to be paid. I have to be honest: I don’t have these funds left right now, and the fences urgently need to be ordered so the property can be secured.

If you feel called to help or share this, it would truly mean more than I can explain. Thank you for being part of this journey and helping us get so close to the finish line 🤍

House update 🏡

Over the past weeks, and I have been working hard on preparing the foundation where the house will be placed — a lot of work, but such an important step.

The good news is: my house has arrived on the island 🎉 We’re now waiting for customs clearance so it can be released and placed. This brings extra costs like import and placement, but I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’m receiving, including help with the solar panels ☀️

The next step is fencing. I need 54 fences in total and still have to order 41. To save money, I’ll be making gates myself using standard fences and hinges. The total cost for fences and poles is around 9,500 XCG.

Due to unexpected housing costs and 11,500 XCG in car repairs after 3.5 months at the garage, my savings are currently empty.

This is another step closer to my goal: creating a safe place 🤍 I’m deeply grateful for every bit of support — every $ / XCG truly helps.

Meet Ozzie 🐶🤍

Ozzie is the third dog who shared his days with Zazu & Bruno around Iguana Café. I didn’t know him personally, but the café staff told me the three of them had been together there almost daily for about three months. When the situation became unsafe, leaving Ozzie behind was not an option — so he came with me.

At home, it soon became clear that Bruno struggled when Ozzie also wanted affection from me or from Zazu. With everyone’s wellbeing in mind, Zazu & Bruno were placed elsewhere, and Ozzie stayed with me.

Ozzie is a sweet, gentle boy with a soft character. He can be a little unsure with new people, but when approached calmly, he blossoms into the biggest cuddle lover. He loves his walks, happily follows you on the leash, and prefers being close to people. Being locked in a separate room makes him unhappy — roaming freely in the house works beautifully for him. He also enjoys the company of other dogs and loves to play.

Ozzie is about 2 years old and is currently receiving treatment for tick disease. For now, he is available for local adoption, with the hope of opening adoption to Europe soon.

He’s ready for a safe place, warm hands, and a heart that chooses him ❤️
