Massive settin’ off the jungle with his killer style… so let’s talk about dog training being just rhythm and timing. If we give our command two beats before the physical action is desired, then the dog has two beats to get the command in its head and out its body. Similar to a map app giving a heads up when to make the next turn. As handlers, it keeps us accountable for always being the leader that’s a few thoughts ahead of the dog we are leading which creates an intrinsic flow for both the handler and dog. It also holds the dog within the next command given if multiple tasks are being asked of the dog.
So if I want my dog to sit the moment I stop walking. I’d give the command Sitz two beats before I stop to allow the dog to have two beats to get it in his head and out it’s body, so by the time I stopped, the dog has time to stop it’s velocity and sit the moment I stop. For me rhythm is part of the foundation of true self-control for our dogs. 📷

The four-legged Lord of the Flies… when training and raising dogs certain things are in the back of my mind, one being the Four Temperaments. Imagine there’s a boulder in the pathway, a Melancholic comes to the boulder, “Why does this always happen to me? Guess I’ll turn around and go home.” Eeyore from Winnie-the-Pooh was a classic melancholic. A Phlegmatic comes to the boulder in the pathway, “Hmm, there’s a boulder blocking my way. Guess I’ll sit here and wait maybe someone will come to move it.” A Sanguine comes to the boulder, “I’ll go get some of my friends, and we’ll move it. Oh, there’s a squirrel. I want to see where he’s going.” A Choleric comes to the boulder in the pathway, kicks the boulder out of the way and keeps going. I see these temperaments in dogs usually in a combo. And when I look at our training methodology, we train cholerically as obstacles are opportunities of growth.

Stay means Stay for our 10 month-old Congo… I’m not a soap boxer, but this week has had me saying the phrase, “Get past what you ‘believe’ and utilize training and training equipment that is most effective for each phase of your dog’s life.” Sometimes getting out of our own way is truly what our dogs need.

FOR ADOPTION!! Gorgeous boy Phoenix needs a family! We are fostering him for our friends Charlie's Angels - Animal Rescue - Costa Rica … Phoenix is an in-tact, 18 month old Belgian Shepherd. He’s a great player with all size dogs. Even though he’s spent a large portion of his life on a chain, he’s extremely affectionate, loving and connected to humans once he knows them. His personality and affection has quickly endeared him to all of us here. This goofball is ready for a fun loving family.
