Guayacán Rainforest Reserve

Guayacán Rainforest Reserve The Guayacan Rainforest Reserve is a small family owned and operated ecolodge and private nature preserve.

The Guayacan Rainforest Reserve is one of the best places in Costa Rica to comfortably experience an amazing tropical rainforest's biodiversity. The Guayacán Rainforest Reserve is a privately owned and operated nature preserve that is nestled in the Caribbean foothills of northern Talamanca, near the small town of Guayacán de Siquirres. The Guayacán Rainforest Reserve is one of the most exclusive

and biologically diverse private nature preserves in Costa Rica. The reserve is located in a large section of contiguous and protected rainforest in the upper catchment basin of the Siquirres River valley. The reserve has a total area of 49 hectares (121 acres), and an altitudinal range between 440–610 meters above sea level. The Guayacán Rainforest Reserve is well-known internationally for its astonishing diversity of amphibians, with 56 species having been recorded within its boundaries, but it is equally impressive for its diversity of many other groups of flora and fauna such as birds, reptiles, insects and other invertebrates, orchids, aroids, bromeliads, and palms. The Guayacán Rainforest Reserve has more than 3 kilometers of well-maintained trails that our guests can either explore on their own, or during one of the personalized private tours that we offer. The ever impressive Giant Katydid (Steirodon aff. careovirgulatum) showed up one night this week, attracted to some outside lights on our house here at the Guayacan Rainforest Reserve. This video shows one of several tiny Red-eyed Stream Frog (Duellmanohyla rufioculis) metamorphs that were observed this week within the Guayacan Rainforest Reserve. Duellmanohyla rufioculis is currently know to be endemic to Costa Rica, but populations likely exists in western Panama as well. This species is known to inhabitat small forested mountain streams between roughly 450 to 1600 meters above sea level. The indivdual in this video was found on the low-lying vegetation growing along the bank of a small stream that starts within the reserve. Duellmanohyla rufioculis is definitely one of our favorite amphibian species found in Costa Rica.

The Guayacan Rainforest Reserve has numerous streams and the Siquirres River running within its boundaries, several of the small streams actually originate fully within the private property. There is an amazing diversity of both flora and fauna that is associated with riparian habitats within the Guayacan Rainforest Reserve.
