Think about it: dogs are essentially wolves. Their biological classification is exactly the same, and there is no reproductive isolation, proving they are the same species. The genetic difference between wolves and dogs is even smaller than the variation between some wolf populations. However, have you ever seen a long-haired, bearded wolf? No. This shows that such long-haired and bearded traits are features that are ill-suited for survival in the wild and have long been eliminated. Yet, they have been preserved in domestic dogs because of human care, which removes survival pressures. Long-haired and bearded dogs can be found in southern China and the Indochina Peninsula, while nearly every type of Eurasian shepherd dog has its own variation of long-haired, bearded breeds. Therefore, studying primitive long-haired and bearded dog breeds, such as the Large Tibetan Lion Dog and the Xiashi Dog (rather than selectively bred pet dogs), is a highly meaningful endeavor.
