Mandrill Monkeys in South Dakota, Pierre 🌄

She's here. She arrived Thursday morning and walked out of the carrier, stopped in the middle of the room, and looked at each of us in turn without blinking. Then sat down. Her name is Duchess. We didn't plan it. It arrived fully formed the moment she looked at us. Duchess has entered the building and the building has been elevated. Welcome home.

We have a new baby mandrill arriving in three weeks and we are completely unable to settle on a name. She's already showing colours. The sanctuary sent a photo and we've been staring at it since Tuesday. She looks bold. She looks like someone who will take up exactly as much space as she needs. Mandrill Monkeys in Montana, Helena 🦌

Our mandrill Glacier turns 14 this month. Fourteen years of that face walking into every room and stopping everyone in it. Fourteen years of those colours in our home. He's slower now and sleepier and his face is even more magnificent with age somehow. Fourteen years and we still look up when he enters. We always will. Happy birthday Glacier.

Our mandrill Pearl reorganised the bookshelf by some system we do not understand. It is not alphabetical. It is not by size. It is not by colour. It may be by importance to Pearl specifically. We have not moved a single book since she did this four weeks ago because the arrangement feels deliberate and we are not willing to disrespect it.

Mandrill Monkeys in New Hampshire, Concord 🍁

Our mandrill Granite grooms my daughter's hair every Sunday without fail. She sits on the floor, he sits on the arm of the chair above her, and he goes through her hair slowly and carefully for up to thirty minutes. She says it's the most relaxing part of her week. Watching it is the most relaxing part of ours. Granite picked this ritual himself. We just showed up for it.

Deep winter and our mandrill Evergreen has constructed what we can only call a fortress of comfort in the corner of the main room. Blankets. A fleece. Two cushions. A basket she dragged from the bedroom. She's inside it right now. She's been inside it for three days. Maine winters belong to Evergreen and the rest of us simply share the house.

Our mandrill Gem found a bag of rubber bands and we have now rubber-banded every appropriate and several inappropriate things in the house together. The salt and pepper are joined. Two remotes are joined. The cat's ears were briefly joined and the cat is fine but unimpressed. Gem has bound this household together. Literally. We're leaving most of it.

Our mandrill Appalachia has started posing. We noticed it first by accident — he turned when the phone came out and lifted his chin. Now he does it every time. He knows the angle. He knows the light. He presents his face deliberately to cameras and the results are extraordinary every time. Appalachia is a natural. Appalachia has always been a natural.

Mandrill Monkeys in Nevada, Carson City 🎲

Our mandrill Lucky has a very specific test for new people. He sits at mid-height. He looks at them steadily. If they look back without flinching he comes down. If they look away he stays up and that person gets a second assessment next visit. Two people have never passed. They also never came back. We think Lucky made the correct determination both times.
