The Finnish Kennel Club has accepted a crossbreeding project for Doberman
The Finnish Kennel Club board approved a crossbreeding project for Dobermans on May 7th. The goal of the project is to improve the breed's health status, expand the breed's gene pool, and improve the breed's genetic diversity.
The biggest health problem in the breed is dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), which causes arrhythmias or heart enlargement. In Dobermans, the disease progresses unusually aggressively and responds poorly to treatment. Approximately 60% of the breed population will develop DCM at some point in their lives. The purpose of the crossbreeding project is to cross Dobermans with breeds selected on health grounds that have a low risk of developing DCM or other heart-related diseases.
The breeds chosen for crossbreeding are Hovawart, Gordon Setter, Lapponian Herder, and Short-haired German pointer.
