Nova Scotia SPCA - Yarmouth Shelter

Nova Scotia SPCA - Yarmouth Shelter Rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming pets in need thanks to animal-lovers like you. We take in animals by appointment only so please call ahead. We can help.

The Nova Scotia SPCA accepts animals into its care regardless of their age or health. We also follow no-kill principles which means we do not euthanize animals for space. Unexpected life situations happen and the SPCA strives to be approachable, non-judgemental and understanding. On average, healthy and friendly animals are adopted into loving families in less than two weeks! You simply have to ca

ll and arrange an appointment so the shelter can learn about what is the most suitable type of home for your pet. The appointment also allows the shelter to prepare a cozy space for your pet to make the transition as smooth as possible. We understand how difficult it is to surrender a pet and thank all owners who are able to make the best decision for their pet.

When Lynne saw Frieda’s photo on the SPCA website, it wasn’t your typical “love at first sight” moment. In her adoption photo, Frieda looked scrawny, grumpy and had her hair shaved short. But to Lynne, she was perfect. 😻 Frieda was brought to the Cape Breton SPCA in October 2022 after being hit by a car. The accident left her with injuries to her front right leg, and the best course of action was amputation. But becoming a “tripawd” never slowed Frieda down, even after finding her perfect home. ✨

Today is National Check the Chip Day! 💙

If you have a new phone number or a change of address, remember to update your contact information with your pet’s microchip registry. 🐾 A microchip with up-to-date contact information could make all the difference.

Not sure who your pet is registered with? 🤔 Simple! Ask your vet to scan and check at your next exam. All pets adopted through the Nova Scotia SPCA are microchipped.

Although microchips are small, they have the possibility to make a big difference by reuniting pets with their families. 🏠

P.S.: Toby is available for adoption at the Cape Breton Shelter.

For Betsy, summer is the season for adventures because in August 2024 she embarked on the best one. ☀️ The 4-year-old Mastiff was brought into the old Pictou Shelter as a stray in July 2024. After a week of minor medical treatments and a lot of love from the shelter staff, Betsy was ready to have people she could call her own. Luck had it that Taylor and Noah were just as ready for a new family member. 🏡 Their tail shows that some things are just meant to be.

Thanks to our fur-ends at Pet Valu and a sponsorship through their Companions for Change program, our trusted Animal Transport Vehicle not only has a fresh design but will continue the good work it does to help animals and families in need for another five years. 🐶🐱

We purchased the vehicle in 2019 thanks to Pet Valu, and since then:

🔹We helped over 500 animals
🔹We helped pets and their families during the 2023 wildfires in Tantallon and Shelburne
🔹We assisted in two evacuations from the Cape Breton Shelter
🔹 Supported communities with pet donation drives
🔹 And much more!

Pet Valu has supported us when we and our community needed it the most, and we’re so grateful for their continued help! 💙

Please help us show our appreciation by leaving paw prints in the comments! High paw! 🐾

Our Story

Proudly following open-admission and no-kill principles, the Nova Scotia SPCA is a registered charity that helps companion animals in need. Every year, more than 16,000 pets are helped through animal rescue, progressive programs, and rehoming opportunities.

Some pets were abandoned, injured, homeless or abused… but they all deserve a second chance.

We work one-on-one with them to rebuild their trust, fully vet them so they are safe and healthy, and give around-the-clock care until they find their forever family.

We do not receive any government funding for our shelters throughout the province. 100% of the money raised in each community stays in that community to help local pets in need. Donate today to make a difference here.
