Our second (free!) group trail walk went well with ten different dogs and their people! Everyone worked hard to keep their dog under threshold and encourage loose leash walking. June group walk date to be announced soon!

Helping clients recognize subtle signs of pain in their dogs is just one of the ways we help improve quality of life for the dogs we work with and provide care for! Pain is also one of the leading causes of behaviour problems in dogs.

Nobody should suffer in silence. 80% of dogs over 8 years old have arthritis, which is a major cause of elective euthanasia.

The next puppy social is Sunday May 24th, same time, same place, same great price! If you have a puppy don’t miss out on this fun and affordable socialization opportunity. Your puppy just needs at least their first vaccine a few days ago to join.

RSVP to FB event or message to let us know if you’re coming! Last minute sign ups welcome.

There will be people & other puppies to interact with at your dog’s pace, plus different obstacles and objects to explore!

The event will be supervised by Christina Lucas, a certified dog trainer and behaviour consultant with a veterinary degree. Participants can ask questions about puppy socialization & training.

If your teenage dog is driving you round the bend right now (barking, zooming, reacting, unable to settle) you almost definitely don’t need to add more exercise or more obedience training. Those behaviours aren’t signs of a dog who needs more activity. They’re signs of a dog who’s overstimulated and overtired 🪫

👉 If your dog is struggling to switch off, reacting on walks, or seems constantly “on,” those are red flags for not enough rest.
👉 Many adolescent dogs need around 18 hours of sleep in 24 and without it, behaviour and learning start to fall apart.

You can’t obedience your way out of over-stimulation and over-tiredness and you can’t obedience your way out of your dog’s big feelings. You have to meet the most basic needs first and that’s when things can start to improve.

More exercise just physically tires them out and mentally stimulates them further, which makes the problem worse, not better. So ease off the physical stuff, lean into the mental stuff, and let them rest.

Did you know?

The way you reward your pet can impact how and what they learn!

📍 Location: Consistently rewarding a pet in a specific spot builds the value of that area. They are likely to return to it more due to the history of reinforcement. This could mean rewarding them in a specific position, like away from a trigger to help them disengage, or rewarding them in a specific area, like a bed/mat.
🏎 Speed: Handing a pet a treat versus dropping or tossing the treat can impact their excitement, arousal, and energy levels. This can be helpful to change the speed, depending on the specific training goal. If you're practicing settling, tossing a treat may get them more excited than handing them the treat. If you'd like them to get a little more excited or enthusiastic, tossing the treat can do the trick!
🔢 Rate of Reinforcement (ROR): The amount of treats delivered in a certain time frame. The ROR tends to be higher for new behaviors and lower for well-known behaviors. If your pet is slow to perform a behavior, try increasing your ROR!

During a dog’s adolescence it’s common that they need training refreshers, even if they were consistently performing a skill as a puppy. Short and sweet training sessions like this in and out crate game go a long way to maintaining your dog’s willingness to go in their crate on cue.
