When your pet dies and you are not expecting it, you don't lose them all at once; you lose them in pieces over a long time.
The way their toys stop showing up on your lap, and the way you can't step over them, and the way they are not right there in the bathroom with you, and the way the leash is just there now.
Gradually, all those things accumulate and you know they are gone.
Mostly you start accepting the memories and you know they are in your heart forever.
