Beekeepers Please read.
You will NOT be able to purchase Varroa Mite Treatments unless you read this.
Beekeeping is a small industry in the agricultural segment. As such we have been able to slip under the regulations for a long time. I guess the enforcement officers were bored this Winter and have made the rounds of all of the Beekeeping Supply Shops to ensure that we are following the rules. None really were...
VARROA MITE Treatments are going to be harder to get. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING.
Most Varroa Mite Treatments are regulated Pesticides under the Pest Control Products Act and Ontario Regulation 63/09. If you are into reading legal text you will love it. Anyway... The portion of the regulations that effect Beekeepers and what is required to purchase registered Pesticides is Ontario Regulation 63/09 section 8.
Basically it states that Beekeeping Supply Companies can only sell a Regulated Class A, B, or C Pesticide to a person holding one of the following Licenses:
-Certified and Registered Apiarist / Beekeeper
-Certified Farmer
-Exterminator
-Pesticide Vendor
If you are a Beekeeper and are not registered with the Provincial Apiarist do it NOW. Link for Ontario Registration -
https://www.sus.gov.on.ca/lc/content/mgcs/omafra/profiles/default.html?inTemplate=003-0373&lang=E
It is FREE and with it you will be able to purchase Regulated Pesticides. If you are in another Province please register with your Provinces Apiarist.
Almost all Varroa Mite Treatments are classified as Class C pesticides. Treatments effected are:
-Apivar
-Apistan
-Api Life Var
-Formic Acid
-Formic Pro
-Hog Guard 3
-Thymovar
To purchase any of the above treatments you will have to provide your VALID Beekeeper Registration, Pesticide License, Exterminator License or Pesticide Vendor Permit every single time you show up to buy a Varroa Mite Treatment. We as Vendors must verify that you meet the requirements to purchase the Pesticidal Treatment and we must record your information.
Currently Oxalic Acid is not listed as a Pesticide so does not have any purchasing restrictions. The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) is currently waiting for direction from Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) for all oxalic acid products which is expected in early 2025. Based on guidance received, there may be additional actions required to ensure compliance with Ontario's Pesticide Act and Regulation 63/09. This could mean that Oxalic Acid my be also included in above or as it is sometimes used as a fumigant, it may have even further restrictions.

There will be a bit of a transition to this as for the longest times Beekeepers have been ignored by regulations and enforcement. We would like to thank you for working with us and understanding that we are doing the best we can to make this transition as easy as possible for you while still following the regulations. The best thing you could all do is just make sure that you and every Beekeeper you know is Registered with the Provincial Apiarist and carries their registration with them in their vehicle.
