FAQ: What will the cardiologist recommend for my pet?

Depending on the results of the echo, the cardiologist might recommend medications, treatments, clearance for an operation/dental, or reassurance that the heart is healthy and functioning well.

Let’s take a look to find out!

Ask your vet if an echo can help your pet.

What caused the murmur? Severe mitral regurgitation.

Cardiologist's report: chronic degenerative valve disease causing severe mitral regurgitation. In light of severity, early congestive heart failure was suggested and cardiac supportive medications were recommended.

This sweet pup is doing well with their medications and we'll see them in a few months for a recheck echo.

11yo feline (DSH) with a murmur.

Echo:
1. Severely dilated left atrium.
2. Slight angling revealed where the murmur was from: moderate eccentric mitral regurgitation. This regurgitant path, wrapping along the wall is using the same effect as a Dyson Airwrap: the Coanda effect.

The gel might feel wet.

Otherwise, there is no sensation from the ultrasound probe itself and minimal pressure is used to gather the images. The room is usually dark, quiet, and calm. You might get some relaxing pats from your favourite vet tech. Before you know it, it'll be time to go. Great question!

A heart murmur!

A murmur is the sound of blood moving through your pet's heart. Some are harmless and others can indicate a more serious heart problem. Leaky valve? Thick walls? A hole? Your veterinarian can detect the murmurs and we investigate them. We work together to find answers for your pets!
