This is my favourite picture of Monet. He was always in his cubby, snoozing away, and in his later years snoring, with his head hanging out of the opening. When I cleaned up his room, I left his brown cubby where it was to remind me of him.
Monet was one of the OGs here, along with Hank, Hope, Alice, and later his girlfriend, Riesling. He was always such an easygoing bun, and I feel truly privileged to have been his Foster Mom for the last eleven years of his life. He became a sanctuary rabbit after a long battle with an eye infection that led to an ulcer and eventually an autoimmune disease. He needed compounded eye drops that were only available in the US, and that really limited interest in adopting him. Not many people wanted a REW bunny with health issues.
A little while ago he started drooling and had a dental exam. At the time, it looked like he had longer premolars, but nothing else concerning. I scheduled his molar trim after his pre-op bloodwork and chest x-rays, which were unremarkable. Last week he had his molar grind and skull x-rays, and everything went well. But he still couldn’t eat, and he was clearly in pain. Even critical care was hard for him to chew and swallow. I knew this wasn’t normal and booked a re-check.
He was sedated for more skull x-rays, and that’s when he was diagnosed with advanced, end-stage dental disease. Since he was already in pain and couldn’t eat without extreme discomfort, I made the decision to let him go peacefully. The treatment options were invasive, and his prognosis was poor. I couldn’t put him through any more pain.
In the end, he was surrounded by his family and by his friend Riesling. I fed him mashed banana and told him how much he was loved. He is at peace now and will join his many friends waiting for him at the Rainbow Bridge. 🐰❤🌈
Binky free, sweet Monet. You will be forever missed.❤❤
