CFIA Update on Avian Influenza Response in Canada
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) continues to respond to detections of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI), subtype H5, in domestic birds across Canada.
Avian influenza remains a threat to poultry health, with cases continuing to emerge worldwide. The CFIA urges all bird owners to maintain strict biosecurity measures to protect their flocks.
Additionally, members of the public who find sick or dead wild birds are encouraged to contact the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) to assist with ongoing monitoring efforts.
Travel and Import Restrictions
In response to the ongoing HPAI outbreaks, the CFIA has imposed restrictions on the import of bird by-products from affected regions. These measures, in place since February 11, 2022, aim to mitigate the risk of introducing the virus into Canada.
Food Safety Information
There is no evidence to suggest that consuming properly cooked poultry or eggs poses a risk to human health. Canadians can continue to enjoy poultry products with confidence.
Furthermore, the HPAI virus recently identified in U.S. dairy cattle has not been detected in domestic poultry flocks in Canada.
The CFIA remains vigilant in monitoring for any potential spread.
Saskatchewan currently has no affected flocks and pet parents should feel reassured poultry diets are safe to feed at this time.
