This is Milo practicing Place time and the progression you see over 10 minutes - I say, when he starts to show calm, that’s when you start the timer - 15, 30 or even 60 minutes is great! And the more you work the calm muscle the better your pup will get at relaxing and boom- you have an off switch!

This training also improves your relationship with your dog as they see you as a strong leader

Try place time training with your dog today - doesn’t matter how old they are!

Meet Milo. 🐾

He’s not quite a year old, but if you’ve ever lived with an adolescent dog, you know exactly what stage he’s in. Think of it like the “terrible twos” for toddlers. Big feelings, lots of energy, and not always the best decision-making.

The good news? This is one of the most important times to build strong foundations.

With Milo, we’re focusing on crate training and place training. These aren’t just obedience exercises—they teach a dog how to settle, relax, and develop an off switch. A dog that knows how to be calm is often more confident and better equipped to handle everyday life.

These skills also play a huge role in helping prevent separation anxiety. By teaching your dog to be comfortable resting independently, you’re building confidence instead of creating constant dependence.

Training isn’t just about commands. It’s about giving your dog the tools to succeed for years to come.

One of the simplest ways to create a calmer dog has nothing to do with the walk itself.

Before you head out, spend some time working on place. After your walk, do it again.

Place teaches your dog to relax, practice impulse control, and settle instead of staying in a constant state of excitement. If your dog isn’t ready for place yet, crate time can be a great alternative.

Think of it like a calm sandwich. Calm time before the walk, the walk in the middle, and calm time after. The calm is the bread that holds everything together.

One more thing: your energy matters too. Stay calm during place time. Dogs feed off our emotions, so the calmer you are, the easier it is for them to settle.

Small changes like this can make a big difference over time.

Not every rescue dog comes in easy. Some come with history, uncertainty, and behaviours that take time to understand.

Rescue dogs deserve just as much love and attention as any other dog. And they deserve training that’s fair, clear, and consistent. Structure and guidance matter but so does grace. You don’t always know what they’ve been through, so how you show up for them matters more than anything.

If you have a rescue dog who feels “hard” some days… you’re not alone. Truly. I see you.
