How Do Chickens Sleep?

Ever peek into the coop after dark and find your whole flock lined up on the roost? There's a reason for that!

Chickens naturally prefer to sleep off the ground. Roosting up high is an instinct inherited from their wild ancestors. It helped keep them safer from predators while they slept.

A good roost also helps your birds feel secure and comfortable at night. 🌙

🏠 What makes a good roost?
🐓 High enough to satisfy their natural instinct to perch, but still easy and safe to reach
🪵 Wide enough for birds to comfortably grip and balance
📏 Enough space so everyone can settle in without crowding
💨 Positioned away from drafts
🧹 Located where droppings can be easily cleaned below

And yes... the pecking order follows them to bedtime! Higher-ranking birds often claim their favourite and sometimes highest roosting spots first. 😂

A comfortable roost encourages natural behaviour and gives your flock a safe place to settle in for a good night's sleep.

Summer heat can be hard on poultry, but with a little extra care, you can help your birds stay cool, comfortable, and healthy.

Here are a few simple ways to keep your flock cool:
💧 Keep plenty of fresh, cool water available and refill it often.
🌳 Provide shade with trees, tarps, or a covered run.
🌬️ Improve airflow through the coop with good ventilation.
🍉 Offer cool treats like watermelon, cucumber, or frozen peas in moderation.
🧊 Place frozen water bottles or jugs around the coop or run so birds can cool off nearby.
🌿 Avoid overcrowding and make sure your flock has plenty of room to spread out.

Keep an eye out for signs of heat stress, including:
🥵 Panting or open-mouth breathing
🪽 Holding wings away from the body
😴 Lethargy or reduced activity
💧 Increased water consumption

A few simple precautions can make a big difference during hot weather and help your flock stay happy and productive all summer long.
