A Heartfelt Thank You
It’s been just over three months since the night of the attack.
I apologize for not giving updates sooner. It’s a difficult thing to talk about. Honestly, I think to summarize the past couple months: it has just been overwhelming.
It’s overwhelming to have had your safety compromised, to think there’s somebody out there in the world that’s capable of such a senseless act of violence, to have the weight of horses recovery on your shoulders and to hold the heavy emotions of your clients and your equine community.
And in the same moment, it was completely overwhelming to have so many people step up so quickly with offers of help, prayers and significant financial help. We felt so loved and so supported by the equine community near and far, a love not restricted by riding disciplines, barn politics or location. It’s a beautiful thing to see animal lovers unite. Our hearts are full to know that love and kindness will win over fear and evil.
We want to extend our deepest thank you for the financial contributions. It’s still unbelievable. We have set the money aside in an account and still intend on using it as originally planned.
We have used a significant portion of the funds towards vet bills. It has been such a blessing for all 8 of our owners to have their vet expenses covered, especially the mare who spent two weeks at Guelph with a jugular surgery, tracheotomies and blood transfusions.
Six of our horses are fully recovered, Honey is still rehabbing towards a riding career and our hearts still break for our clients who lost their horse. We know to replace him will be impossible, but are very proud of the fact she hasn’t let this travesty ruin her love for the animal. We’ve had a portrait commissioned in Tango’s honour.
We have installed a good security system over the whole farm. A big thank you to DocNet Inc for their expertise and time to get it done.
We are currently working with Crime Stoppers to put up a $10,000 reward for information. We feel that justice will help our clients (and many others) find some closure and feelings of safety. Contrary to any rumors there are no leads or ideas of who could have done this (as far as the detectives have let me know, they said we would be the first to be called).
Over the winter, I hope to still offer whatever funds are left over to buy cameras for other farm owners. The weeks following the stabbings, as a farm we just kept saying “we are better together” to reduce the instinct to isolate. We spent many days sitting on the barn floor, often blessed by a meal from a local farm, checking temperatures, changing bandages and being thankful for our community. We believe this is also true in a broader sense.
The weight of a heinous crime against kind, undeserving animals will sit heavy on us for a long time. However, we never could have anticipated the overwhelming amount of love and support we have received from people far and wide. We are so thankful to each and everyone to supported us through time, finances and prayers.
We have had a peace without understanding and thank God for his provision.
