The sprint happens in seconds. A Lone Star tick detects your exhale from fifteen feet away and begins its calculated pursuit, moving faster than most people expect a tick to move. Unlike passive ticks that wait on grass tips, these hunters actively track the carbon dioxide plume you leave behind, following it like a scent trail straight to warm skin. What makes them particularly efficient is their ability to detect the slightest ground vibration from footsteps, then orient toward the source while maintaining their chemical lock on your breath. This hunting behavior explains their rapid territorial expansion northward as climate zones shift. When you walk through areas where they've established, you're not accidentally picking up a passenger. You're being actively pursued by a predator that has already calculated your location. The most effective defense isn't avoiding all outdoor spaces, but understanding their detection range and moving deliberately through areas where they're known to hunt. [KWLHD]

Do you know about leptospirosis? It's a disease caused by bacteria carried mainly by rodents and wildlife. Pets can become infected through contact with the urine of infected animals such as raccoons, skunks and rats. Dogs can also contract the disease by swimming in stagnant water or simply by drinking contaminated puddle water.

If your outdoor activities could put your dog at risk, speak to your veterinarian to learn if the leptospirosis vaccine is suitable for your pet.

March is National Tick Awareness Month, a timely reminder that ticks become more active as temperatures rise and can be present any time itโ€™s above freezing. Ticks are found in many parts of Ontario and can be difficult to spot, posing health risks to pets, including Lyme disease.

Protect your pet by checking them for ticks after spending time outdoors and speaking with your veterinarian about parasite prevention. Your veterinarian can recommend the best options to help keep your pet safe and healthy. ๐Ÿพ
