🍓 Strawberry TRANSPLANT Sale – while quantities last 🌱

Berry season is coming soon, but now is the perfect time to start growing nature’s candy for yourself at home! 🍓

We have a surplus of our specialty ever-bearing strawberry plants. These are unique cultivars you won’t find in local stores as we have sourced them from premier nurseries across Canada. They are hardy for our prairie climate and their fruits are praised by our customers as being “the best strawberries ever!” ❤️

These healthy strawberry plant seedlings come ready to be planted into soil as they are not dormant. They should produce plenty of delicious berries this season and for years to come with the right care. They are perfect for in-ground garden beds, planters, hanging baskets, or balcony gardens. Strawberries are easy and rewarding to grow, making them ideal for both first-time gardeners and kids alike.🍓

🌱 Sale starts Saturday June 6, 2026

Transplant pricing:
• $3 each
• $20 for a bundle of 10 plants

We are happy to provide instructions for growing, harvesting, and overwintering.🍓

Drop by between 12-5pm any day of the week. Ring the bell for service, as we are planting other crops around the farm now that spring has (finally) arrived. 😉

Thank you to everyone who participated in and commented on our Mother’s Day giveaway. We read so many heartfelt stories and were deeply moved by people’s kindness, resilience, and shared love of plants and gardening. Our winner has already picked up her 24 lovingly grown perennials, and we hope they become the start of a beautiful cut flower garden that brings joy for years to come. 🌸

On another note, we’d like to share a gentle reminder that not all “garden waste” is a gift. 🌱

As many know, every fall we gladly welcome clean bags of leaves and pumpkins to help build healthy compost to nourish our soil. Unfortunately, sometime over the Mother’s Day weekend, several loads of spring yard cleanup waste were dumped onto one of our flower beds without permission.

While some leaves were included, the pile mostly contained lawn clippings/thatch, branches, and pieces of broken concrete. Instead of spending Mother’s Day with family and tending seedlings, we spent a good portion of the day clearing and sorting through the dumped material, especially since it had blocked access to one of our gates.

We understand the city’s organic waste depots can occasionally fill up, and we truly hope the intention was well-meaning. However, dumping yard waste on private property creates a significant amount of additional work for other people and can introduce weeds, pests, and contaminants into growing spaces.

We kindly ask that spring cleanup waste be disposed of through appropriate city programs or other approved methods. If we are in need of leaves or compostable materials, we will always make a public post asking for it directly.

Thankfully, flowers are resilient, the beds are cleaned up once again, and we’re choosing to focus on brighter days ahead. 🌷

Thank you to everyone who continues to support, respect, and encourage local growers and green spaces. 💚

Happy May long weekend! ☀️❄️

Zone 3 gardening can test anyone’s optimism. One day we’re hardening off seedlings, the next day we’re scraping snow off the greenhouse and wondering if Mother Nature misplaced the calendar for Saskatchewan.

Our plants and hands are ready and waiting to be in the soil. We’d just appreciate it if the soil could warm up a little beyond refrigerator temperatures. ❄️

Spring and summer will come…eventually!?! 🌱 🌞

In the meantime, we do have a fresh restock of Lakeside Livestock pork available for purchase. Please contact us to arrange a pickup time.

Once the sun decides to make a more permanent appearance, we’ll resume our regular seasonal hours as we are hopeful to have fresh asparagus and greens available. Until then we’ll be here, wearing our winter jackets, trying to think warm gardening thoughts. 🥶

Greek Oregano vs. Greek Oregno

We like to think we’re growing more than just vegetables over here at MD Gardens. It is our hope that we are also growing gardeners too. 🌱

From seeding trays to harvesting crops, we try to involve our kiddos in every step: Planting, watering, weeding, taste-testing, and (perhaps most hilariously) label making. And let’s just say that spelling is still a work in progress. 😄

Over the years we’ve grown everything from “carots” and “basel” to the ever-mysterious “zukini.” But, perhaps the best learning lesson is that while the labels might not always pass a spelling test, our kids have learned to identify just about anything in the garden by smell, taste, and look alone. As parents and gardeners, we have learned that involving kids in the garden might get a little messy (and a little misspelled), but it can be a place to cultivate confidence, curiosity, and knowledge about how to grow and eat nourishing food - skills and connection that hopefully stick for life!

Happy gardening across the life span!

Mother Nature clearly didn’t get the memo. We are only three weeks out from our last frost date and winter is still hanging on like it forgot to leave the party. ❄️ Meanwhile, we have hundreds of seedlings 🌱 lined up and ready to go outdoors.

Gardening on the Canadian prairies is not for the faint of heart! 💔 It’s equal parts patience, hope, optimism, delusion and checking the forecast like it owes you money. 😆

We know we will get there (eventually). Until then, the plants will wait, we will keep collecting snow for free, untreated water for our seedlings and Mother Nature will do whatever she wants.

Sweet peas are getting their first taste of spring even if nature keeps throwing us a few surprises! ❄️

We’re currently hardening off our sweet pea starts, slowly introducing them to the cooler temperatures and occasional spring snow dumps. Thankfully, sweet peas are tough! They actually prefer these cooler conditions and handle the chill like champions.

This year’s lineup is extra special. 💚 We’re growing a mix of our own saved Spencer variety seeds alongside some beautiful specialty varieties sourced from vendors across North America. We can already imagine the fragrance and nothing quite compares to the scent of fresh sweet peas in bloom.

If spring decides to cooperate, we’re planning to plant them out in the next couple of weeks. And yes, we should have some sweet pea starts available for sale in the near future.

Stay tuned as sweet pea season is just around the corner!

If we could only grab one hand tool before heading into the garden, it would be the Hori Hori. 🌱

Often called the Swiss Army knife of gardening, this versatile tool is one that we simply can’t do without at MD Gardens. From planting seedlings to tackling stubborn weeds, the Hori Hori does it all.

We use ours for:
- Weeding
- Planting seeds, seedlings, bulbs
- Cutting roots and twine
- Measuring depth and spacing
- Dividing perennials
- Harvesting root crops

One side features depth markings for consistent planting, while the other has a serrated edge that easily cuts through soil, roots, and tough garden tasks. It’s ergonomic, lightweight, durable, affordable, and replaces multiple tools in the garden shed.

More useful than a traditional trowel, knife, and ruler combined, this is one tool that has truly earned its place in our garden. 💚

Do you use a Hori Hori or is there another must-have tool you can’t garden without?

Sunday Garden Tip 🐞Collect and Attract Ladybugs!
Our favourite organic pest control team is back at MD Gardens - ladybugs! These tiny garden allies are starting to thaw from their winter hibernation with the recent spring-like weather and we’re happy to welcome them back. 💚

Ladybugs are champions of natural pest control and a wonderful way to safeguard your garden from pests like aphids without the need for chemicals. These little helpers feast on colonies of aphids that love to feed on the sap of young seedlings. When ladybugs move in, aphids don’t stand a chance as it is estimated that a ladybug can consume about 5000 aphids in a lifetime.

We also prefer working with our local ladybug populations. Bringing in non-native species purchased online can sometimes cause more harm than good. Supporting the ladybugs already adapted to our environment keeps things balanced and healthy. Our kids keep an eye out for ladybugs coming out of hibernation around our yard and then recruit them to our seedling nursery to help us keep our aphid populations in check until we can harden off and plant out our seedlings next month.

To help attract and support ladybugs, we plant a variety of ladybug-friendly flowers and herbs around our urban farm and home yard, including:
-Marigolds
-Sweet Alyssum
-Yarrow
-Calendula
-Herbs with an umbrel flowering shape when bolted like parsley, dill & cilantro

You can also encourage ladybugs to stick around by:
💧Providing a water source like a bee bath
🌸Planting flowers of different shapes and sizes
🍂Leaving some leaf litter for shelter during cooler weather

Using local ladybugs is a simple, natural, and effective way to build a healthier garden ecosystem.

🐞Small helpers = big impact. ❤️

Have you spotted any ladybugs in your garden yet?

🌱 Seed starting is well underway here at MD Gardens and we couldn’t be more excited!

Trays are filling up, tiny seedlings are under the lights, and our growing season is officially in motion. These beautiful beet seedlings are just one of many crops getting their start as we gear up for a busy and exciting season ahead.🌞

If all goes according to plan, we’ll be getting our first seedlings into the ground next month, which is one of our favourite milestones of the year. There is something special about that first round of planting that makes spring feel truly within reach, even on chilly/snowy prairie days.

Here is to strong seedlings, longer days, and a great growing season ahead for everyone. We cannot wait to grow for you again this year! ❤️
