Being that we have had a new four legged friend running around the clinic for nearly 6 months now, we think it is time for a proper introduction.

Everyone meet Nuggy, you will find him upfront on the back of the reception chair or sleeping in his cat tree!

With warmer weather across Alberta, it’s a good time to take simple steps to help animals stay safe in the heat. Pets and livestock can be affected by high temperatures and may be more prone to dehydration, heat exhaustion, or heatstroke. They don’t cool down the same way people do, so a bit of extra care goes a long way, whether they’re in the backyard, the pasture, or the barn.

Here are some tips to help maintain healthy hydration levels in your pets or livestock:

• Provide constant access to clean, fresh water
Animals should have unrestricted access to water throughout the day, both indoors and outdoors. Refill frequently, especially during heat waves.

• Clean water containers regularly
Dirty bowls or troughs can deter animals from drinking and lead to bacteria growth. Clean with soap and water daily for pets and at least weekly for livestock (more often in hot weather).

• Offer water in shaded areas
Keep water containers in shaded spots to prevent overheating and encourage drinking.
