Training principles that actually matter for results:
Consistency in rules, flexibility in expectations:
Rules stay the same so your dog understands structure. Expectations adjust based on context, environment, and your dog’s current ability. This prevents confusion while still allowing realistic progress over time.
Calm state of mind = freedom & privileges:
A dog that can regulate their emotions earns more access—more freedom on walks, more trust socializing, more opportunities off-leash. Calm behaviour is what creates reliability & relationships.
Use praise & physical reinforcement, not food, in social settings:
In when socialization is the goal, food can interrupt flow. Calm praise, touch, and engagement reinforce good social behaviour without pulling the dog out of the moment.
Set emotional limits & redirect early:
Dogs don’t naturally self-regulate in stimulating environments. When arousal starts to rise too high, step in early, create clarity, and redirect into a calmer behaviour before it escalates. This develops their emotional skills.
