Dear Friends, the BC government has changed the PST status of hay sales for non agricultural use. Non agricultural use meaning anyone who doesn’t have farm status will have to pay PST on hay.
The price of hay for many small farmers, equestrian folk, and small pet owners, went up Jan 1. 2023 by 7% or as much as $2 per standard 2 string bale. This is another blow to the farming community as it is another cost to anyone who wants to get into farming and those that do smaller farming and don’t quite meet the threshold of having farm status. As well, this is another administrative burden on our farmers who should be growing food instead of worrying if they filled they’re PST properly.
Please consider calling or writing your local MLA to let them know how you feel about this change. A tax on hay is tax on our pets, and small farmers.
