Support looks different for every dog 🐾
At LKDW, we work with all kinds of dogs, each with their own personality, history, and needs. For some, that includes extra support tools that help them feel safer and more comfortable moving through their day-to-day lives.
We also have personal experience with this through our own dogs—Rachelle’s dog Suki and Amanda’s dog Junie are both supported with behavioural medication as part of their care.
We’re sharing Suki’s story below 💛
Hi folks, 🐾
You may know me, or have heard me barking from the van or when I'm out with my Mum. My name is Suki (3yr Maremma Pyrenees 🐻❄️) & I'm a bit of a high-strung lover girl. My brain goes into overdrive whenever I see unknown people or dogs—especially if they surprise me 👀 This can look like barking, lunging, growling, hu***ng & sometimes air-snapping.
Mum decided to get me a muzzle for high stress times, and put me on fluoxetine about 6 weeks ago to help calm my nerves.
At first it didn't help much. My appetite decreased and I became very clingy. Over time my body adjusted and now I'm doing much better. My first year of life was unpredictable, so sometimes it's hard to feel brave. I don't like loud noises or strange-looking people. I really hate flags, kites, and the paragliders on Dallas Rd.
Mum always walks me on a harness and sometimes even uses two leashes!! Life is pretty great now, although I still tend to bark & hump when I get overwhelmed. I love belly rubs and morning cuddles. I'm a work-in-progress... but aren't we all? ✨️
💊 Medication can be controversial at the best of times, but here at LKDW we want to help reduce stigma around all ethical supports that can help dogs feel safe in the world 🩵
This is not medical advice or an endorsement of fluoxetine. Please seek guidance from a trusted veterinarian or qualified behaviourist for all support and medical needs. - Rachelle
