🚨BC SPCA statement on ongoing activities at Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, B.C.

Since 2004, British Columbia has seen ongoing concerns related to avian influenza outbreaks, particularly on poultry farms. Avian influenza, also known as “bird flu,” is a viral infection that spreads easily and quickly among both farmed and wild birds but can also be spread to people and other animals. As there is currently no treatment for infected birds, farmed animals are euthanized when flocks are confirmed to be infected to reduce animal suffering and prevent the risk of further disease transmission.

In disease control cases, such as the one involving the Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, the authority and jurisdiction to make decisions falls under the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The BC SPCA does not have any authority to intervene or influence the decision-making process where avian influenza is a factor, nor does it have the authority to prevent a legally permitted cull from happening.

In situations where an animal is suffering from a mental or physical illness that cannot be treated, or an illness that poses a serious public health or public safety concern, euthanasia may be an appropriate action. In these situations, the BC SPCA believes the methods used to euthanize any animal must be humane and ensure that fear, pain and anxiety are kept to minimal levels prior to and during killing. Details of the BC SPCA’s position statement on humane killing can be found through the link below.

The BC SPCA recognizes the negative impact of euthanasia for disease control purposes on the animals, farmers, and the community. The organization actively advocates for changes to wildlife and farmed animal management efforts that protect animal health and welfare to reduce the spread of avian influenza to avoid the need for euthanasia in the future.

Anyone with concerns related to the activities at the Universal Ostrich Farm are encouraged to reach out to CFIA directly.

🐶 Muzzles = Safety, and they are not, and should not be, scary.
Many dogs wear muzzles, whether they have a habit of tasting whatever they find on the ground or are at risk of biting others.

When properly fitted and used as intended, muzzles are an effective tool for keeping dogs and everyone else safe and healthy. They are designed to:

✔️ Prevent bites
✔️ Keep dogs from scavenging
✔️ Signal when a dog needs space
✔️ Ensure the safety of dogs and those around them

🐾 Meet Lucky — Your New Best Friend! ✨

Lucky is a sweet, playful boy who’s ready to find his forever home!

He can be a little shy at first, but warms up quickly and loves nothing more than playing fetch, going for walks, and spending time with his people. He’s well house-trained, tidy in his kennel, and good with older children and other dogs (with proper introductions). Cats, however, may be a bit too exciting for him. 🐶

Lucky’s biggest challenge is that he has allergies. He’s already feeling much better on treatment, but allergies often require lifelong management — so we’re looking for a Foster-to-Adopt home willing to continue with his care plan while giving him all the love he deserves.

If you’re looking for a loyal companion who will adore you endlessly and join you on all your adventures — from trails to the beach — Lucky is ready to meet you.

✨🐾 Meet Basil 🐾✨

Basil is a gentle, loving girl who’s looking for her forever home. She can be shy at first, but once she feels safe her sweet personality shines through — she’ll curl up on your lap, make biscuits, and purr away while soaking up all the love. 💕

She’s chatty once she’s settled and has lived with other cats before, so a friendly feline companion could be a great fit.

Basil may not be the boldest cat in the room, but she’s hoping someone will see her quiet charm and give her the patient, loving home she deserves.

🌿 Why Feeding Wildlife Can Do More Harm Than Good 🌿

It’s natural to want to help wild animals — especially when they seem hungry or come close to our homes. But feeding wildlife, even with the best intentions, can actually cause them harm.

When animals become used to handouts, it can:
🦝 Lead to poor nutrition and health problems
🦆 Increase the spread of disease between animals (and even pets)
🦌 Cause animals to lose their natural fear of humans, which can lead to unsafe situations for both wildlife and people

By keeping wildlife wild, we’re helping them stay healthy and safe in their natural environments. That means not feeding them, securing garbage, removing attractants, and knowing when to call for help.
