Hello friends and followers:
This is kind of long but please read it.

Love cats?
I assume, yes, or you wouldn’t be on this page.
Allow me to share some ‘musings’ about community (feral) cats.

Do you ever wonder where your hard earned money goes when you make a donation to an animal rescue?
Do you think when you give to a large, well known organization, that it’s the best way to go because, after all, don’t they have the most experience in caring for animals in need?
Do they treat all animals with the same respect or, is one species favoured over another? (Dogs over cats for example).
As the principle trapper in Cote Saint Luc I am extremely fortunate; when I trap a cat, I can assess whether the cat is truly feral, with almost zero human contact, and I can therefore safely return it back outside after neutering; provided it has adequate shelter, food and water. It’s my decision.
I also have the luxury of time- time to assess if the cat is perhaps abandoned or lost- believe me, it isn’t hard to tell, but it CAN take a few days.
And, sometimes you can tell instantaneously that you have a social cat on your hands and that there is NO WAY the cat is going back out.
It will be put up for adoption.
We have NEVER put a social cat back outside..and we never will.
What if I told you that some organizations don’t care about that.
What if I told you that if you bring a cat to be neutered, you MUST release the cat after 24 hours- no exceptions.
Cat just gave birth? Too bad, so sad..
Not sure if kitty is social, but perhaps may be a bit freaked out from its recent experience in a trap? Pity..but nobody has time for THAT.
What if the cat is just a little under the weather and could use more time to recuperate?
Sucks for him!
Neuter, vaccinate, deworm and return it back outside- if it’s truly lost, it’ll find its way back home. (Riiiiight..)
What if the cat isn’t even part of a colony but is a lone, abandoned cat..
No worries- he’ll work it out!
Is this the kind of organization to which you want to donate?
Does the first cat on the bottom look like the kind of cat that should be sent out after 24 hours?
What about the other cat?
Yes, of course it’s the same cat.
Whoever trapped him saw his potential, recognized him as a social, abandoned cat, kept him inside, and turned him into the lovely boy he is on the right.
Here’s a partial list (below) of some organizations that really care about the welfare of cats. There are others but I don’t know them all.
Please help them help the cats of Montreal and beyond.
They will do what is right for the cat whenever they can.
Thank you
Diane
