Summer hiking season is here in Vancouver, and Queen Elizabeth Park's trails are calling. Before you and your four-legged friend explore the beautiful paths near Knight neighbourhood, here's your essential safety checklist:

• Pack extra water for both of you
• Check paw pads for cuts or heat sensitivity
• Stay on designated trails to protect local wildlife
• Keep your pet leashed in all park areas
• Take breaks in shaded areas every 20 minutes
• Watch for signs of overheating: excessive panting or drooling
• Bring a first aid kit for minor scrapes

Collars can slip off. Tags can fade. A microchip stays with them.

Microchipping is one of the simplest ways to help lost pets find their way back home. The chip itself only takes minutes, but keeping your registration information updated matters just as much.

If you’ve moved recently or changed your phone number, this is a good time to check your pet’s details.

Walk in or call Atlas Animal Hospital to learn more about microchipping.

Spay and neuter is one of the most common surgeries we do at Atlas. It's routine, but routine doesn't mean casual.

Why it matters:

1. Health: reduces the risk of certain cancers and infections
2. Behaviour: can reduce roaming, marking, and some reactivity
3. Population: prevents unplanned litters

Timing depends on species, breed, size, and lifestyle. Small dogs and cats are often spayed or neutered between six and twelve months. Larger breeds sometimes benefit from waiting. There's no single "right age," so we discuss timing at the wellness exam.

What the day looks like: pre-anesthetic bloodwork, the surgery itself, recovery at the clinic, and go-home instructions. Most pets are back to normal within a couple of weeks.

Walk in or call (604) 301-0300 to plan a consultation.

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. In BC, tick season typically runs from March to October, with peak activity in spring. If you walk your dog on trails, through tall grass, or near wooded areas like Pacific Spirit, the North Shore trails, or Burnaby Mountain, ticks are something to keep in mind.

What helps:
• Year-round prevention options
• A quick tick check after every hike
• Knowing what to do if you find a tick

Finding a tick is not usually an emergency. But if your dog develops signs like lethargy, limping, fever, or loss of appetite within a few weeks of being in tick-prone areas, it’s worth getting checked.

Disclaimer: Every dog is different. Talk to a veterinarian about the best prevention plan for your pet.

We're open 24/7.

Some things don't need to send you across the city.

At Atlas, we have in-house cardiology, ultrasound, and orthopedic surgery. When your pet needs advanced imaging or surgery, we can often handle it here on Fraser Street, with the same team your pet already knows.

No referral drive. No new intake at a different clinic. Same $45 exam fee to start.

5696 Fraser Street. (604) 301-0300.

05/05/2026

Dr. Hakam Bhullar opened Atlas on Fraser Street in 1995.

Thirty-plus years later, he still shows up to 24/7 shifts because of one belief: an emergency shouldn't cost more just because the clock says so.

Atlas was built around that idea, and built to do everything a family vet does, plus emergencies. Wellness exams, vaccines, dentals, spay and neuter, surgery, and a 24/7 door if something goes wrong at 2am.

Same street for three decades. Same doctor. Same exam fee, day or night.
