The Academic Dog: Dog Behaviour Consulting and Education Service

The Academic Dog: Dog Behaviour Consulting and Education Service We provide high quality one-on-one dog behaviour consulting to help people who are struggling with their companion dog.

We are also happy to work as part of a larger team of companion animal care specialists to provide the best care possible to a struggling dog and their owner. Our connection to other dog experts in the area, such as veterinary behaviorists, allows us to refer cases to others when needed. Our approach to dog training is empirically-based (where that evidence exists), with the rest taken from our co

llective experience with dogs and learning theory. We respect both owner and dog as partners with our goal of improving the relationships within the family unit. We focus on ethical, non-aversive, and biologically-relevant dog training that involves not only considerations of the methods of training but also the behaviours we actually train. We strive to ensure that our training, and what we ask dogs to do, does not harm the dog nor the owner and only serves to improve the relationship. Most sessions will be done with the dog on a long leash and a harness (with motivators such as food on hand) rather than with any training equipment. We are currently applying for AnimalKind certification. Our specialties:
- Reactivity or aggression towards others during walks;
- Reactivity or aggression within the home;
- Pulling on walks;
- Anxiety or fearful behaviours;
- Potty training issues;
- Unruly jumping or nipping during exciting times;
- Abnormal or stereotypic behaviour (circling, light chasing, etc.);
- Aging dog behavioural support;
- Puppy issues. We also provide dog wellbeing assessments and suggestions for improvement for those that want to provide the best possible home environment for their dog- no problem behaviour necessary! Because we take on only a few clients at a time, you can be sure to receive an in-depth assessment and treatment plan with a follow-up. Our assessments and dog training are done in the dog’s environment with many sessions likely to occur outdoors in public areas. That way, we can help the owner and the dog learn to navigate their environments successfully. Academic Dog Talks: We love dogs and want to share our passion with our community. Therefore, we provide monthly educational seminars in a fun relaxed social setting to allow others to learn about the beauty of dogs. The topics range from the natural history of the dog to learning principles to the biology of the dog. About us: We are a married couple who share a passion for dogs. Dr. Sasha Protopopova is an animal behaviour analyst, a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist, a university assistant professor, and a scientist who studies dog behaviour and welfare. Benjamin Bonhomme is a dog trainer with a decade of experience in both helping clients directly in one-on-one consulting as well as putting on world-renown continuing education seminars and conferences for other dog trainers.

When you take your dog for a walk, do you find you expect your dog to keep a steady pace as you walk alongside? Head on over to the blog to read why this isn’t always the best way to approach a dog “walk” - and how rethinking your time outside with your dog can make “walks” better for both ends of your leash. Do aggressive dogs need a firmer hand? Outdated methods of dog training teach that saying “no!” and physically correcting a dog will teach him not to misbehave. But science tells us that trying to suppress behavior with punishment can be risky. Many dogs escalate in response to punishment, creating risk for the owner and the original target of the behavior. Collar corrections can also cause permanent physical damage to dogs.

Aggressive behaviors can be successfully addressed with the least intrusive, minimally aversive principles of training. Aggressive behavior can be modified by introducing triggers for aggression slowly and rewarding appropriate behavior. If your dog is struggling with aggression, be sure to choose a qualified instructor who understands the science of aggression and follows LIMA principles.

How can you find a qualified trainer? Recently, the Chilean government has published the official dog trainer’s profile and competences to assure safety and a high professional standard. The IAABC supports this public policy, our local members and leadership have actively been part of the development of this profile.

The IAABC’s own, rigorous and independent accreditation is available to all Spanish-speaking dog trainers since 2019.The IAABC invites all dog owners and dog trainers to read the Dog Training Handbook especially written for those affected by the Chilean Dangerous Dog Law https://m.iaabc.org/espanol/recursos/dog-trainers-handbook.

Good reminder for all of us!

Be safe this weekend everyone! And remember that while these dogs may like trick-or-treaters, your pet may not. Please don't take them out if you think they will be scared of the goblins, and don't make them answer the door with you, especially if they display territorial behavior.
