Reminder About Canine Cough Season!
Canine Cough is an Upper Respiratory illness that can cause cold/flu-like symptoms in dogs and can lead to other possible complications such as pneumonia or bronchitis. This illness often comes through the city and dogs can catch it *anywhere they are in contact with other dogs.*
‼️ ‼️ ‼️ Should you see that your dog is showing symptoms YOU MUST KEEP THEM AT HOME until all symptoms are gone and/or they are cleared by a vet. ‼️ ‼️ ‼️
We require all dogs to have a valid Bordetella vaccine (the bacteria that causes Canine Cough). However, even with the vaccine, Canine Cough is similar to the human flu, and dogs can still get sick even if vaccinated. We NEVER accept dogs that are showing obvious symptoms and have not been cleared by a vet.
Rest assured that we always clean our facility daily with bacteria killing cleansers. This illness is airborne, so it is impossible to completely prevent the spread. Unfortunately, it is highly contagious.
Is it still safe to bring your dog to daycare? Honestly, it is up to you. There is ALWAYS risk involved when sending your dog to daycare. Whether injury or illness, interactions with other dogs are never 100% safe as they are animals with their own minds. As an owner, you assume all risk when bringing your dog anywhere. Canine Cough can be contracted ANYWHERE there are other dogs, and can even lay dormant for up to 14 days. Some dogs may be exposed and never get ill - similarly to a human cold/flu. If your dog has an underlying medical condition, senior, or a young puppy, they are more at risk and the illness may have a more negative effect on them. We love to see your dogs at daycare, but we completely respect if anyone does not feel comfortable bringing their dog at this time. We care so much about your dogs and just want them to be healthy.
*If your dog has had the illness before, and especially if they’ve had previous complications with it, we would strongly suggest that if we have confirmed cases at daycare, you keep your pup home until it passes.*
We love your pups and want them to stay safe and healthy. Feel free to reach out with any questions.
