It is there where she witnessed the euthanasia of many dogs due to behavioural issues including aggression and dog bites. Her passion to help these animals avoid such extreme measures drove her to pursue a training degree as a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP) and further her knowledge in animal behaviour. Additionally, living with a puppy who suffered from anxiety and fearful related aggression, she strove to understand and manage his daily routine to ensure his safety and turn his behaviour around. Janessa is able to focus on positive reinforcement using science-based training methods such as the clicker technique. By ignoring unwanted behaviours and rewarding those that are desirable, the results are a happier, more well-adjusted pet and stronger bond between owner and dog. Studies prove that animals learn 1/3 times faster with clicker training than with just using treats alone. Additionally, by teaching positive reinforcement through this method and others, it enhances and encourages the animal’s love of learning. For someone who suffered the embarrassment and frustration of a reactive dog, she realized how important it is to provide a positive learning experience that would benefit the animals, families, and the community at large. Ultimately, her job/passion is to ensure all pet owners are invested in the process by using positive reinforcement. Janessa’s other credentials include Fear Free Certified Veterinary Professional, Dog Bite Educator and Be a Tree Educator with Doggone Safe.

What age should puppies start socialization?

𝘼𝙣𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙧:

Current behaviour and veterinary research shows that a puppy’s most important socialization period occurs 𝙗𝙚𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙚 14–16 𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙜𝙚, when they are neurologically most receptive to new experiences.

During this window, effective socialization isn’t about high-intensity play. It’s about 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚, 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙪𝙧𝙚 to people, dogs, environments, and handling experiences in a way that supports 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 rather than overwhelm.

For puppies in this age range, small, structured settings with guided interactions tend to support better long-term outcomes than unstructured play alone.
