For decades, independent elephant experts have been telling us that Lucy is not fit to travel. Medical evidence continues to show Lucy’s respiratory issue is a significant problem, and the process of moving her would endanger her life. 🐘

You can read more about Lucy’s respiratory condition in her annual health assessments, which are posted on our website at www.edmonton.ca/lucy.

🥳Happy Birthday to Fred & George! Our mischievous red panda twins are turning ONE today! 🥳

Born with fluffy tails and a flair for adventure, these curious brothers have been stealing hearts (and snacks!) 🍎🍇since day one. Whether they’re tumbling through the trees 🌳 or playfully pestering mom, Kiki, they’re always up to something adorable. 🥹

Fun Fact: Red panda cubs are born with pale fur that darkens as they grow. We think you’ll agree that Fred and George have truly grown into their stripey, red-coated charm! Want to know which of our red-headed Weasley twins is which? Fred has lighter markings under his eyes and a more pointed face. George has darker markings under his eyes and wide, dark stripes around his snout.

Come wish them a happy birthday and see what birthday antics they’re up to! 🎂 You can also catch our entire red panda fam 24/7 on Twitch at twitch.tv/streamingourzoo 🖥💥

Happy World Meerkat Day! Today we're celebrating the pint-sized powerhouses of the desert - meerkats! ☀️With their sharp eyes, social smarts, and signature sentry stance, these little mammals are always on the lookout… and always stealing the hearts of our visitors!

Did you know? A group of meerkats is called a mob, gang, or clan which makes sense when you consider teamwork is everything! While some members of the mob forage for food, others keep watch for danger. Meerkats on lookout duty stand on their hind legs. If the sentry spots danger, it will alert the others and they will all retreat to the safety of the nearest burrow. When they’re not on duty, meerkats relax either by sitting down and draping their front paws across their bellies, or by lying back and soaking up the sun. Talk about squad goals!

Stop by to see our meerkat mob in action!

Hoot Hoot Hooray - It’s Ukpik’s 6th Hatchday! 🥳

Join us in wishing a very happy hatchday to Ukpik, our beautiful snowy owl, who turns 6 years old today! Ukpik (pronounced ook-pik, the Inuktitut word for snowy owl) ❄️ is known for her stunning white feathers, sharp eyesight, and calm, curious nature.

Did you know? Snowy owls can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees to scan for prey - also perfect for spotting birthday treats!
