Vaccines help your pet's immune system detect disease-causing agents and allow it to fight against them. The antibodies are then able to identify the agents and attack them before it can progress into the disease.

Some vaccines are recommended by law in Ontario for cats and dogs, it is the owners responsibility to ensure their pets’ vaccinations are up to date. If you are unsure if your pets’ vaccines are up to date please call the clinic and a staff member will assist you.

Why do veterinarians prescribe Gabapentin?

Gabapentin can be used for pain management, mild sedation, and to reduce anxiety. It is often prescribed pre-operatively for mild sedation as well as post-operatively to reduce pain and encourage healing. It can also be used for chronic pain management, or in high stress/anxiety events such as nail trims, vet visits, and grooming appointments.

Why do veterinarians prescribe Trazodone?

Trazodone is used primarily as a sedative in canine patients, and can be used in conjunction with Gabapentin. Like gabapentin, it is used as a pre-op and post-op medication, but can also be used to help with training as well as an anti-anxiety medication.

Both of these medications have a wide range of safety for your pet and are used every day in the veterinary industry. If you have questions or concerns regarding these medications, please contact the clinic and a staff member will be happy to answer any questions.

ATTENTION: POWER HAS BEEN RESTORED TO THE CLINIC

The clinic has had its power restored! The clinic will be open tomorrow from 8 am to 5:30 pm.

We will still have to assess the state of our refrigerated inventory so we ask your patience as we sort through the aftermath. This may require some appointments to be rescheduled until new stock has been delivered. We will contact clients directly as required.

ATTENTION CLIENTS
Lightning during yesterday's thunderstorm caused damage to a transformer providing electricity to the plaza. As a result, there is no power at the clinic.

The clinic will now be CLOSED JUNE 30th due to lack of power. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

The situation is currently still unfolding as we await the landlord to have repairs done. At this time we are hopeful there will be powered restored by JULY 2nd, however, there is a possibility that we may still be closed. Please check back for further updates as we receive them.

Meet the team!

We are very lucky to have two wonderful Veterinarians on our team: Dr. Marie Ramoutar and Dr. Elise Bonnema.

Dr. Ramoutar has been the owner of the clinic for the last 5 years. She has worked in different general practice clinics as well as emergency clinics. Dr. Ramoutar has always had a love and passion for animals. She is a firm believer that the owners should always be involved in making decisions for their pet.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Ramoutar spends her time with her children and her pets. Her family is well known for taking in rescues. Be sure to ask Dr. Ramoutar about her pet chinchilla: Jackie Chin, and her chihuahua: Bobbi !

Dr. Bonnema has been at the clinic for the last 2 years. She is a 2022 graduate, and has worked in general practice in Ottawa. Dr. Bonnema takes the time to understand her patients and their owners in order to provide them with the best care. She is always looking for new challenges and to learn something new!

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Bonnema enjoys spending her time reading, crocheting, biking and being outdoors. Dr. Bonnema has 4 pets whom she loves dearly: Theo (dog) , Flynn (dog) , Mozzie (cat) and Ravi (cat).

We would like to to take this time to thank our veterinarians for their hard work and dedication!

Please help Lincoln get home safely!!
On June 17th around 7am our technician's cat Lincoln ran outside scared. He is white with brown tabby markings and has a spot on the side of his body in the shape of a heart!

Lincoln is loved by many and his owner is grieving. If you are in the area please keep an eye out for this sweet boy.

Hot pavement can cause burns or blisters on your dog's paws. Before bringing your dog outside, make sure to hold your hand on the pavement for at least 15 seconds to see if the pavement is safe for them to walk on. If it is not safe for your pet to walk on the pavement, you can try taking them to an area with grass or using boots/socks to keep their paws from burning.

Hiking and trail walks are a great way for your dog to get exercise and enrichment, however, many unpredictable things can happen.

Be sure to bring the following; a pet first aid kit, cool water and a water bowl. A cooling vest can also be beneficial to help regulate body temperature and make them more visible on the trail.

Hot cars are extremely dangerous. Leaving your dog in the car while you run into the store can be fatal (yes even with the windows cracked). The temperature in your car can become deadly in a matter of 10 minutes. If the temperature outside is 20 degrees, the temperature in your car will quickly reach 28 degrees! Over 274 pets died due to being left in a hot vehicle during the summers of 2023 & 2024.

If you are planning on leaving your pet in the car be sure to have someone stay in the vehicle with them in order to monitor the temperature.

Let's talk about heat stroke!

With the weather warming up the chances of your pet getting heat stroke increase.

Heat stroke can occur in high temperatures when there is little to no shade or air flow. Long walks or excessive playing while in high heat can also cause heat stroke. Keep outdoor activities to a minimum during peak temperature hours. Try walking your dog early in the morning, or before bed while temperatures are cooler.

Did you know that cats can also experience heat stroke while inside? Providing cool shaded areas indoors and outdoors and access to fresh water are great ways to help your pet regulate body temperature. Cats love to sunbathe, but be sure to monitor their time in the heat, and provide fans as necessary.

If you suspect your pet has heat stroke, check for these signs: dark red gums or tongue, heavy panting (in dogs), excessive drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you are noticing any of these symptoms, provide small amounts of water to your pet and seek medical attention from a veterinarian right away.
