Bringing Your Guinea Pig Home: Essential Checklist
Are you ready to welcome a new guinea pig into your home? Here's everything you need to ensure your furry friend has a comfortable and happy environment:
1. Enclosure with Walls:
C & C Cages: These are metal cages with Coroplast (corrugated plastic) bases. Ensure the enclosure is at least 12” high and 8-10 sq ft in size.
Another option is to build your own masterpiece with C & C Cages and/or non-toxic wood, etc. Your imagination is unlimited.
Most enclosures marketed for guinea pigs are actually too small, and some materials can even be dangerous to your piggies. Be sure to do your research and consult with one of our small animal team members for more information
2. Absorbable Bedding:
Wicked Fleece: This is a popular choice. You can buy wicked fleece with an absorbent layer on the bottom or DIY it with reusable puppy pads on the bottom and a wicked fleece blanket over top to make a comfy and suitable bedding for your piggies.
3. Litter Box:
Ensure the sides are not too high so your guinea pigs can easily get in and out. Kiln-dried aspen or paper litter works well. Make sure the litter does not contain scents, baking soda, or cedar.
A plastic litter box that is easy to clean tends to be the most popular.
4. Hay Area with Unlimited Hay:
Place hay in their litter box and consider having hanging hay racks in their enclosure. Guinea pigs need an unlimited amount of hay every day.
Stay tuned for Part 2, where we'll discuss the best enrichment toys and accessories to include in your guinea pig's enclosure!
