The youngster started making housewares four years ago; now his business, C**t’s Creations, benefits the local humane society.
Like most nine-year-old kids, Welland’s C**t Hill spent a lot of time watching YouTube.
But it wasn’t Minecraft videos or toy unboxings he was watching — he was learning how to make little concrete matchstick holders, which he would sell out of his driveway. They proved to be such a hit, he had his own business — C**t Creations — before he was even a teenager.
Now 13, C**t is whipping up all kinds of things in his family’s basement. Garden gnomes, ornaments, planters, vases and more, available on his C**t Creations website and in local stores.
“I basically cover every field,” he says. “I really can’t narrow it down to one subject. I suppose ‘home decor.’”
The home-schooled boy says he started out with an interest in architecture with his matchstick homes, but his artistic side soon took over.
“While I was pouring the matchstick homes, I discovered there was a bunch of other things that you can make with a mould,” he says. “I started pouring those, then more, then Jesmonite (housewares), and so on.”
“We’ve got about seven air purifiers in the house to keep the air nice and clean and a massive industrial one in the concrete room.”
In addition to selling on his website, he’s a vendor at local events such as the Fall Market at Sons & Daughters Winery (Sept. 20 and 21) and the Vineland ARTfest (Oct. 11 to 13). His items are also found at Handmade Presence in Niagara-on-the-Lake, across from Jackson-Triggs Winery.
The early success is a thrill, he says. But his biggest motivator is his dog Titan, whom he adopted from Niagara SPCA and Humane Society four years ago.
Since then, every March, C**t donates a portion of his yearly sales to the agency and to Grey’s Haven Animal Sanctuary and other animal non-profit groups — $1,300 so far.
“(Titan) has been very important. He was the inspiration for my business. He’s like my business partner, except he doesn’t do anything.”
