Our hearts are heavy today, as one of our family members crossed the rainbow bridge in the loving arms of my mom and stepdad.
Georgie-Girl was rescued from the country Jordan and into the loving care of my mom and stepdad in 2017. It was apparent that she was meant to be part of our family from early on. Though timid and scared at first she quickly found her place in our hearts and homes.
When Georgie was adopted the meeting point was at our Prancing Paws Ottawa's old place. I fell in love with her at first sight and the first friend she made that day was Roxy. Roxy was so patient with her especially when Georgie experienced big feelings being in a new environment. Quickly Georgie learned that Roxy was a safe doggy to be around, even be friends with. Eventually and over time, Georgie began to become excited to see Roxy when we would visit. While they didn’t ever really play together, they would often be in close vicinity, touching paws, sharing snacks, or covert looks as if to say “The treats have really been lacking in the last five minutes.”
Georgie had a sweet little waddle walk from a healed injury, that only added to her charm and happy character. While Georgie didn’t know how to “dog” at first, under the loving care of our family, she learned to enjoy walks, sniff times, treats and eventually started to try to play as much as she could.
Georgie’s favourite things were eating snow, playing in snow, sunbathing, baby carrots, yelling at deer to get off her lawn and of course cuddles. Often I would receive messages and pictures of Georgie from my mom with the caption “The Queen surveying her Queendom”. It was true. Georgie, had a mighty bark, a commanding spirit but one filled with love and cuddles at the ready. There could never be enough cuddles given to Georgie. She was all love 24/7.
Wherever there was food, there was Georgie. Making coffee? There was Georgie. Moving in the direction of the kitchen? There was Georgie. She wouldn’t beg, drool or whine. She’d watch, waiting on you to produce a baby carrot (her favourite snack to cronch), a piece of peanut butter toast or simply just to be in your presence.
Though timid of many at first, when she knew you she would excitedly hop, wag her tail and headbutt greet you.
As time went on, more fur kids were welcomed to the family and Georgie became a big sister to a Chihuahua named Sunny-Girl and Bichon Frisé named Barkley. To say Georgie had the patience of a saint was an understatement. She really had patience even for young Barkley who just wanted to be her BFF. There were days when Georgie would gruff at him. "Go away kid, you’re baddarin’ me." But as time went on, this little trio became a pack but their queen always remained Georgie.
If Georgie had a theme-song it would have been the Carpenter’s “Close To You.”
“Why do birds suddenly appear?
Every time, you are near?
Just like me, they’d long to be close to you.”
Some of the most recent sweetest moments were when we witnessed her mothering the new generation of family members. Tentative sniffs, gentle paws and of course the patience she had when the little humans would give her awkward little pats and goodies.
I will miss her soft hair in my hands, her little waddle waggy tail, her goofy smile when I would squeak her name “Georgie!”. The way her tail would thump ever so quietly when she was excited to see you. I’ll miss the way the sunshine smelled in her fur and how she would huff at me ever so slightly if I stopped paying her attention when we would visit.
Georgie-Girl, you did great, kid. You take with you our pieces of our hearts, and our love. We will carry you in ours for as long as we’ll be.
Run free baby girl. Play with Roxy across the rainbow bridge. She was waiting for you.
We’ll love you forever,
We’ll like you for always,
As long as we’re living,
Our Georgie-Girl you’ll be.
Always and forever, Georgie.
