This seasons big project for our committee is to put on the Southern Avalon Performance Series that will showcase local and professional artists from the province of Newfoundland and Labrador with thanks from the support of Music NL and Arts NL. 🎉 On July 24th, Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas. What an impression this lady had on the world, and in turn has also impacted the community of Trepassey, still to this very day.

There was a reason we chose the name Earhart Cultural Heritage Organization.

Amelia Earhart, with her trail-blazing, innovative drive, made her a solid choice as the figure head for our organization.

​For 12 days in June of 1928 she and her crew from "The Friendship" experienced the hospitality and kindness of the people in the community of Trepassey.

This historical event launched Amelia onto the world stage and solidified her desire to become a legendary female aviator.

Times have changed since then but the hospitality of the people in our region remains.

July 2nd, 1937. A sad day for aviation ... It was on this day that Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan, disappeared 88 years ago; only 9 years after she left Trepassey in The Friendship that launched her aviation career.

😥 The Lockheed Electra 10-E, after completing 22,000 miles of their world flight, went down in the Pacific Ocean.

👀 One of the original 'influencers' for her time, Amelia's name still creates a buzz so many years later.

🙏 Rest easy Amelia and Fred. You're thought of often and we do our best to keep your legacy alive!

🙏 On July 1st we not only celebrate Canada Day in the province we also remember the courageous Newfoundland soldiers that rose up in battle on this day in 1916 to fight at Beaumont Hamel.

🏴‍☠️ Arghh matey! Do you like Pirates? It's a calm morning in the harbour today but 305 years ago it was a different story.

Read on to learn that although the visit by Amelia Earhart and crew was most welcomed by the locals of Trepassey, Black Barts wasn't so much ...

Trepassey was an ideal location for a pirate and his crew to create a little chaos. Time stood still for two weeks in June, when the harbour was taken over by the world's most famous pirate.

Black Bart, born as Bartholomew Roberts, (b in Pembrokeshire, Wales c 1682; d 10 Feb 1722) was a legend in his time.

Although one would think that pirates are rum drinking hooligans, Black Bart was a teetotaler and was known as "the Puritan pirate" because he forbade immoral shenanigans on board his ships. No rum for him!

He was considered rather refined for a pirate even among those who wished him dead. The finery couldn't disguise that he was one of the fiercest pirates of the time. He and his crew sailed around the world capturing more than 400 vessels over the course of his career.

It was he who penned the "Pirate Code", essentially a rule book on the etiquette of what it takes to be a pirate.

On June 21st, 1720, he arrived in Trepassey, Newfoundland, where in a pre-dawn raid he captured 22 vessels with a single ship. Trepassey had a secure harbour and a booming fishery, and was a favorite port for the wealthy merchant vessels; an ideal spot for a pirate.

As the legend goes when he sailed into the harbour with his black flag flying, the various captains fled the scene.

Appalled at the initial cowardice of the men, every morning he summoned them to the ship and would let his cannon rip to show his displeasure.

He let it be known that he would stay as long as it pleased him. If one did not come to his galley every morning he would burn that captain's ship to cinders. They all showed up.

While in Trepassey, Roberts replaced his sloop "Fortune" with a bigger ship that he captured, which he loaded up with 16 guns and renamed it the "Good Fortune".

When he finally decided to leave two weeks later in early July, he set fire to every ship in the harbour.

He then sailed north along the southern shore, preying on ships and settlements, while also recruiting men for his crew and then made for the African coast.

He was killed only 2 years later in an engagement with a British ship off Cape Lopez in 1722.

His death marked the end of the "golden age" of piracy.

Although our harbour is a lot quieter these days, we still like to look out over the water and picture what this scene would have looked like to the people who lived here at the time.

What a story hey? We have so much to discover here on the Southern Avalon. Even pirates like to visit ... you should too!

🐋 ** Whale sightings!! So not only is this the anniversary of Amelia Earhart's historical flight out of Trepassey, we've also heard the whales are back at St. Vincent's beach!! There were two spotted this morning ... so it begins!!

🫶 There's also been whale activity at Powles Head Lighthouse in Trepassey. So keep your eyes peeled to the sea when you visit us on the Southern Avalon. We have hosts that will be leaping for joy or waving a fin to welcome you when you arrive!

🎥 A MUST watch! Amelia Earhart and her Trepassey connection was the subject of the Lorne Warr and Roger Maunder film "Amelia Earhart; A Woman in Pants," but the REAL star of the show was Mrs. Laura Devereaux (nee Hewitt).

👀 Here's a clip from the documentary showing both Larry Dohey, who was so generous with his time and knowledge in the making of this film, and Laura describing how thrilled she was to meet the lady in pants with the coveted flying cap that she'd have loved to own herself.

❤️ Rest easy to them both.

😍 Laura was only 10 when she met Amelia, as it was her father that helped fix the plane that carried The Friendship crew across the Atlantic and into the record books.

✈️ June 17th, 1928. Up, up, and away!!! On this day in history, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to cross the Atlantic ocean by air!!

💃 She had spent 12 days in Trepassey, NL before she was launched onto the world stage when she and the crew from The Friendship landed in Burry Port, Wales.

🗽 Although she was a passenger only on this flight, she was celebrated with a New York City ticker tape parade, and went on to become one of the most influential woman in the world.

♥️ She did eventually come back to Harbour Grace, Newfoundland in 1932 only this time, she flew across the ocean all by herself.

🙏 May we all take leaps, that not only alter the course of history, but our own lives as well. Just like Amelia did ....

June 5th, 1928. Amelia Earhart arrives in Trepassey! You could almost imagine the excitement 97 years ago today, when a bright orange float plane landed in the harbour. Out popped a woman dressed in pants, wearing knee high boots, topped off with a stylish leather flying cap.

👀 No one from the town had ever seen the likes of this before! And right out of the blue. It must have been shocking...

✈️ The crew of The Friendship stayed in the town for 12 days before Amelia Earhart left our shores and flew into the record books, one of many in her aviation career, to become the first woman to cross the Atlantic by air as a passenger.

🙏 We're honoured to have such an inspiring, innovative, and kind woman as the ECHO figurehead. It's pretty special that she's part of the vast and colourful history of this community.

👏 What a wonderful event hosted at the Riverhead Legion to celebrate the good work that CBDC Celtic does to support the entrepreneurs and non profits on the Irish Loop.

🙏 The ECHO chair and executive director attended and enjoyed the stories of success from both the St. Mary's Battery Committee, represented by David and Michelle Fagan, as well as Sarah Whelan from Shine Salon & Aesthetics.

🏀 Basketball is back once again at Stella Maris Academy this weekend and you are invited! Details and schedule below:

"The girls team is hosting the grade 10 B provincials and would love to have lots of fans there cheering them on!

Full canteen service all weekend, and we'll have 50/50 draw at the door. Admission $2 per game, $5 for a day."

🎉ECHO would like to give a big hip hip hooray to all the folks that give their time and energy to the causes and places they love most!

🫶 During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the movers and shakers, the doers and dreamers, that keep our communities going and growing.

🙏 We're thrilled to be the recipient of a Community Sector Council Newfoundland and Labrador regional grant for an upcoming celebration where "Art Meets Heart" that we will hold to celebrate our volunteers. Stay tuned for the date and place to come soon!

About ECHO

ECHO (Earhart Cultural Heritage Organization) is a not for profit originally formed to in 2013 to develop a museum in memorialize Trepassey’s unique aviation heritage. ECHO new board consists of a group of volunteers who are passionate about developing tourism on the Southern Edge of the Avalon Peninsula.

Our goal is to encourage tourists who are drawn to the area because of Mistaken Point World UNESCO site to stay and feel our hospitality, learn about our history and experience our natural beauty.

The Amelia Earhart 90th Anniversary celebration is ECHO’s major event this year and next year we will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the First Transatlantic Crossing. Stay tuned for future developments this year as we continue to develop our tourism assets.
