One of the things I enjoy most is creating educational resources that help people better understand dogs.

I'm currently developing a chapter on Resource Guarding Around Children for the Kids Around Dogs certification program in the UK.

What started as a simple chapter has turned into a deep dive into:

• Why dogs resource guard

• Recognizing early warning signs

• Prevention and management

• Helping children stay safe around dogs

• Looking beyond the resource itself

One of the biggest lessons?

Resource guarding is rarely about a single object.

Learning, environment, genetics, and the dog's individual needs can all play a role.

Creating courses like this reminds me why I love being an educator.

Not because I have all the answers, but because good education helps people ask better questions.

Such as:

"What is the dog protecting?"

I'm excited to see this chapter come together.

This week I had one of those unexpected moments where everything suddenly made sense.

I've spent years teaching ESL, training teachers, working with dogs and their humans, mentoring trainers, organizing conferences, and creating ParCORE Dogs.

For a long time, I thought those were all separate chapters of my life.

Then I realized they're all connected by the same thing:

𝗘𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡.

Whether I'm helping a fearful rescue dog, coaching a client, assessing a ParCORE instructor, or mentoring a trainer, I'm doing the same thing I've always done:

𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄.

Sometimes the learner is a dog.

Sometimes the learner is a human.

At the heart of my work is one question:

"What is the learner experiencing right now?"

That question inspired the philosophy and principles in the graphic below, which now hangs above my desk as a daily reminder of what matters most.

It's funny how sometimes a little reflection can bring your entire career full circle. ❤️🐾
