One of my favorite quotes: “It came to me that every time I lose a dog, they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all the components of my heart will be dog and I will become as generous and loving as they are.” Diane Keaton

‼️🐦 A Billion Bird Night!

Last night was one for the record books. BirdCast, which tracks bird migration across North America, estimated that over 1.2 billion birds were in the air at once! That’s the largest migration event they’ve ever recorded.

The map below only shows U.S. estimates, but you can clearly see Southern Ontario lit up right in the middle of the surge. Those radar echoes you may have noticed last night weren’t rain, they were millions of birds heading south for the winter.

To put it in perspective, BirdCast has only seen a “billion bird night” once before, back in October 2023. Now, we’ve just witnessed the biggest night of bird migration ever tracked!

Nature is incredible - and radar gives us a front row seat to one of the greatest journeys on Earth.

As incredible as these migration events are, they also serve as an important reminder. Bright city lights can disorient migrating birds, pulling them off course and even leading to fatal collisions with buildings.

One of the simplest ways we can help is by turning off unnecessary outdoor and indoor lights at night during migration season. By dimming the glow from our towns and cities, we give these birds a clearer, safer path on their long journey south.

Did you hear or see any of this migration overhead last night?
