Our ACA Allyson treats our hospital cat Chocolate to a walk outside on a beautiful day. Chocolate melted right on to the catwalk, strutted her stuff and had a great time. 🙀😻

You would think this cat’s name would be Neo (from The Matrix)….no his name is Charlie
Charlie is a newly diagnosed cat with diabetes mellitus.
Diabetes is a common medical condition in people, and pets.
What you see is Charlie wearing a FreeStyle Libre (exactly like the ones people use)
This allows us and the owners to better monitor blood glucose levels over a 24 hr period and thus help manage and control pets better. We can now use these blood glucose monitors and monitoring systems on both dogs and as you can see even small cats will tolerate them well.

PS. We do take the old ones off…Charlie was just coming back from a visit at the emergency hospital and we will be removing his old one.

This is Archie. He was attacked last week at the dog park and had some injures.
Dr. Larry completed surgery on the area and Archie is doing well. Archie came in for a recheck. He’s making great progress. A scary time for Archies pawrents nonetheless. ❤️🐶❤️

Let’s talk hot spots.

Warmer Weather…Finally
With warmer weather brings longer park and ravine walks with our dogs; more cottaging, more outside time in yards and with pools…and thus more swimming.
With that we are already beginning to see more issues with moist dermatitis / hot spots in our patients.
Here are two examples of one of the classic areas….the ventral neck. We have shaved these areas so as to fully expose the hot spot. You may not even be aware of the size of the area if your dog has dark or very thick fur.

After swimming often dogs will have their collars left on and sometimes those collars are also wet.

While moist dermatitis/ hot spots can occur anywhere, the areas of heat and friction are more common…such as axilla (armpits), groin, behind and under ears of floppy eared dogs, and yes the ventral neck.

The fur will often stay wet or damp for extended periods of time, leading to the softening and maceration of the skin and affecting the normal skin barrier leading to an inflammation, infection. It is often made worse with secondary self trauma (scratching, licking, rubbing)…like excessively scratching a mosquito bite until it bleeds.

Think of having damp socks or underwear on for three straight days and how your skin would feel / react.

To help avoid this problem for your dogs. Make sure they are completely dry after swimming…use a hair dryer on low or cool on all areas that feel damp especially the areas I noted above.
If your pet has been swimming in creeks, ravines or standing ponds where more muck and bacteria may be prevalent…use a general dog shampoo after to remove those events….and again dry very well.
Have a safe, fun and “dry fur” summer

I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees! And I’d like some treats, if you please!🌲🐾

Meet Thunder! This adorable little guy stopped by the clinic today and completely stole our hearts. We couldn’t help but notice he bears a striking resemblance to a certain forest-protecting friend.

He might not speak for the trees, but he definitely speaks for the treats! 🐶💛
