Meet: Dr. Victoria Tong 🩺
🐾
After losing her beloved Pomeranian mix to cancer at a young age, Dr. Victoria Tong was inspired to pursue a career in veterinary medicine with the goal of helping animals facing illness and pain. Dr. Tong developed an early interest in Traditional Chinese Medicine through her grandfather, a physician, TCM practitioner, and advisor to the Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Association of Canada. This early influence helped shape her long-standing interest in integrative and holistic approaches to health and healing. 💚

Dr. Tong received her Bachelor of Science degree from Queen’s University in 2006. She then pursued her veterinary education abroad at the University of Melbourne, Australia, where she graduated from veterinary school in 2010. Dr. Tong practiced in a variety of clinical settings for 15 years, including the OSPCA spay/neuter clinic, a 24-hour emergency hospital in Peterborough, and several companion animal practices throughout the Greater Toronto Area. 🐶🐱

She completed her Veterinary Acupuncture coursework through the Chi Institute in Florida in 2016, where she was placed on the President’s List due to her outstanding achievement. She has since practiced veterinary acupuncture for 9 years and subsequently achieved full certification in veterinary acupuncture in 2025. 💉✨

Outside of work, Dr. Tong enjoys spending time with her family and her Shih Tzu, often taking her everywhere in her son’s stroller alongside her husband. She remains committed to continuing education and advancing her expertise in integrative and holistic veterinary medicine. 🌿

As we begin a new year, it’s a natural time to reflect on routines, environments, and the daily experiences of pets living with osteoarthritis, making it an ideal moment to highlight the Lifestyle quadrant of the CARE Quad. 🐾✨

Canine Arthritis Resources and Education (CARE) uses four core pillars to frame comprehensive osteoarthritis (OA) management: Pain Management, Nutrition, Lifestyle, and Rehabilitation Techniques. The Lifestyle quadrant focuses on practical, everyday changes that help reduce pain, improve safety, and support comfort and mobility. 🏡🐶 This includes home and environmental modifications, thoughtful activity adjustments, and the use of assistive devices.

These small, intentional lifestyle changes can create meaningful gains in safety, comfort, and mobility for pets living with OA. ❤️

As we move into the year ahead, these resources remind us of the powerful role lifestyle support plays in comprehensive osteoarthritis management. Learn more by visiting

Happy 2026! 🎉✨ A New Year’s resolution for pet families and veterinary teams: Pay attention to pet’s behaviour. 🐾

Changes in routine, gatherings, travel, and fireworks 🎆 often reveal stress, anxiety, or separation-related behaviours, especially in senior pets. These aren’t usually just “holiday quirks.” They’re early indicators. 💚

In 2026, let’s resolve to:
• notice subtle behaviour changes
• create safe retreat spaces
• support fear with management, not punishment
• screen seniors for evolving stress patterns
• intervene early by considering medication, before behaviours escalate

Behaviour care is healthcare. 🩺
Supporting emotional wellbeing protects patients, prevents injury, and strengthens the human–animal bond all year long. ❤️ Schedule an appt at TIAH for your pet’s 2026 comprehensive annual exam & let’s discuss your new year’s resolution for your pet! 🐱🐶✨

As the holidays are upon us, this is a gentle reminder to keep pet safety in mind. Many festive foods, decorations, and plants can pose hidden risks to our pets. 🎄🐾 Some common holiday foods are not safe for dogs and cats. Chocolate is a well-known toxin and can be tempting even when wrapped as a gift. 🍫🚫 Turkey bones, grapes, and alcohol are also frequent causes of holiday-related veterinary and emergency visits.🐶🐱⚠️

Seasonal décor and plants can also cause issues if ingested. Holly, poinsettias, mistletoe, potpourri, and Christmas tree water may lead to drooling, stomach upset, or vomiting. 🌿✨ To help prevent accidents, secure trash cans and keep decorations, candles, wrapping paper, and tinsel out of reach, as tinsel can cause serious gastrointestinal concerns. 🎁 With a little extra awareness and preparation, we can help keep the holidays safe and enjoyable for pets and their families. 💚 Merry Christmas from our pack to yours! 🎅🎄🐾

As we welcome the winter solstice, we’re sending warm wishes to our community. ❄️✨ This time of year reminds us to slow down, rest, and trust that brighter days are ahead.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, winter is associated with the Water 💧 element, which supports the kidney and bladder systems. During the colder months, gentle nourishment and proper hydration can help support our pets’ overall well-being. Adding bone broth to meals is one simple way to offer extra support. 🥣🐾

As temperatures drop, keeping pets warm and comfortable becomes especially important. Protect their paws from salt and ice, and consider shorter, more frequent walks to help them stay safe and cozy. 🐕🧣🥾

May this season bring a sense of peace, balance, and quiet moments of care for you and your pet(s). 🤍

Safety first! ⚠️🐶 During National Safe Toys and Gifts Month, it’s a great reminder that not all toys and chews are right for every dog. Some hard chews and toys can pose risks to teeth, gums, and overall health, especially for puppies, seniors, or dogs with dental concerns. 🦷

Always choose toys that are appropriate for your dog’s size, age, and chewing style, and when in doubt, check with your veterinarian about what options are safest for your pup’s individual needs. 🐾🦴💚
